The role is based at DroneShield’s central Sydney headquarters. Overseas on-the-ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Netherlands, Denmark, Mexico and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries worldwide. 


About the role

DroneShield is seeking a mid-level Mechanical Engineer or Industrial Designer with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney, NSW. The position will report to the Mechanical Engineering Lead.

This role will be responsible for designing, developing, testing and productionizing antennas, working alongside RF Engineers and Electronics Engineers within the Sensors and Effectors Architecture Group.

Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations 

  • Design and develop mechanical antenna solutions using SolidWorks and PDM
  • Design and develop antenna test fixtures to assist with verification and validation activities
  • Selection and testing of various materials for antenna radomes and elements to accordance with product requirements
  • Create fabrication drawings using SolidWorks
  • Perform FEA and thermal simulations using SolidWorks to improve designs
  • Write up test plans and conduct testing to validate mechanical designs
  • Troubleshoot issues that arise at all stages of the product lifecycle
  • Create and manage accurate and detailed Bill of Materials as needed
  • Manage several projects simultaneously, project timelines and provide daily/weekly updates as needed
  • Manage and negotiate with suppliers of components and mechanical parts

Qualifications, Experience and Skills 

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or similar field
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with other disciplines
  • Good understanding of mechanical engineering such as stress, deflection, sealing, tolerances, clearances, DFM and willingness to learn as needed
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, environment and deliver to deadlines under pressure
  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing preferred
  • Experience CAD modelling with SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM preferred
  • Experience conducting FEA, CFD with SolidWorks preferred
  • Experience working with antennas and RF test equipment is preferred
  • Understanding of material selection and their effects on RF is preferred
