Platforms Engineer AWS (AU)

Work with cutting edge AI technology, making the world a safer and more secure place. DroneShield (ASX:DRO) offers an opportunity to solve some of world’s most challenging technical problems in the rapidly growing counterdrone sector. Our customers are militaries, government agencies, airports, critical infrastructure, law enforcement and many others.

With one of the largest listed defence company market capitalisations in Australia, part of the ASX200 index, and having raised approximately $250m in 2024 alone, DroneShield is undergoing hypergrowth stage, fuelled by rapidly increasing use of drones for nefarious applications, from battlefield, to terrorism, to contraband delivery and commercial espionage.

This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Sydney CBD. There are approximately 380 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 500 staff by end of 2026. Overseas on the ground presence includes Virginia (USA), Netherlands, Denmark, Mexico and Dubai, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.

About the role

We’re looking for a Platforms Engineer to help scale and evolve the internal systems and tooling that support our engineering and AI workloads, with a strong focus on AWS infrastructure.

As part of the Platforms team, you’ll help define best practices for managing AWS environments, build out infrastructure automation, and contribute to improving deployment pipelines and developer experience — driving measurable outcomes through DORA metrics.

You’ll also contribute to key cross-functional projects such as DroneShield’s Global VPN (gVPN) platform, ensuring secure and reliable connectivity across international deployments, alongside other initiatives that strengthen our global platform reliability and developer productivity.

This role reports to the Platforms Lead.

Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations

  • Build, evolve, and support DroneShield’s AWS infrastructure using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).
  • Build out and maintain DroneShield’s Global VPN product, enabling secure, reliable connectivity across international deployments.
  • Improve system reliability across DroneShield’s platform and workloads.
  • Define and maintain Terraform modules and reusable automation patterns for AWS services (ECS, EKS, S3, CloudFront, RDS, IAM, VPCs, ALBs, NLBs, etc.).
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines (GitLab preferred) and integrate compliance checks into build workflows.
  • Support rollout of security and compliance guardrails through automation and IaC.
  • Track and improve DORA metrics: deployment frequency, lead time, MTTR, and change failure rate.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure, following AWS governance and security standards.
  • Proficiency with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code and automation in AWS environments.
  • Solid understanding of AWS core services, including ECS/EKS, S3, CloudFront, RDS, IAM, VPCs, ALBs, NLBs, and networking fundamentals.
  • Experience with CI/CD systems (GitLab preferred) and integrating pipelines with AWS services.
  • Programming or scripting skills in Go (preferred), Python, or TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Understanding of DevSecOps principles and ability to embed security and compliance into AWS infrastructure.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills — comfortable diagnosing complex issues in cloud environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve developer experience through automation and reliability practices.

Nice to Have

  • Experience implementing and improving DORA metrics in collaboration with engineering teams.
  • Experience with AWS cost optimisation and Well-Architected Framework reviews.
  • Familiarity with secrets management (Vault, SOPS, AWS Secrets Manager).
  • Experience with MLOps or data-intensive workloads running on AWS.
  • Prior experience in defence, critical infrastructure, or other high-compliance environments.
