This role is in the DroneShield Sydney headquarters in Sydney CBD. There are approximately 320 staff based in the 4,000sqm facility today, scheduled to grow to approximately 400 staff by end of 2025. Overseas on the ground presence includes USA, Denmark, Mexico, and UAE, as well as distributors in over 70 countries globally.
About the role
DroneShield is seeking a QA Software Engineer with relevant experience to join the team in Sydney. The position will report to the Software Quality Engineering Manager. The role is primarily focused on testing the software features of C2 Systems. We are looking for a Quality Assurance Software Engineer to work on the quality and reliability of our products at all levels of development. You will be responsible for creating and implementing QA strategies and process improvements. Attention to detail, problem solving and a pragmatic, practical approach to technical and process issues is required. Key challenges of the role include delivering test documentation and processes, implementing automated and manual test cases for existing and future products and features, and working with the development team to resolve reliability issues before software release.
Responsibilities, Duties and Expectations
- Work close to the code on the daily basis, thinking as a QA into the whole system.
- QA with experience testing complex systems involving both software and connected hardware
- Comfortable setting up and working with local development environments, including front-end and back-end components, to investigate and validate issues independently
- Design, implement and maintain automated testing frameworks within a CI/CD process.
- Experience with Network Protocols and tests, having previous experience with
- Be comfortable with Linux and Docker environments.
- Create and maintain test plans for new features and existing features from the systems using Xray.
- Experience with different frameworks like Selenium, Pytest, Playwright and K6.
- Collaborate with the other QAs on improvements and better ways to handle the activities assigned to the team.
- Identify and resolve testing dependencies, traceability, risks and gaps in test coverage across a complex distributed system
- Work closely to developers to identify early issues during the feature development whether it come from the Backend or Frontend and test coverage areas to focus on.
- Be comfortable with Bug reports, test planning, test priorities alongside the team
- Hands on Release Testing - providing 'hands-on' assistance during the quarterly release cycle to ensure software release performance and stability. Having the hands-on opportunity to work with the real sensors and all the integrations from the system.
- Understand the technology strategy of the organisation to ensure QA strategy alignment.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills
- BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience
- 2 to 5 years of Software Quality Assurance experience.
- Strong proficiency with Linux systems, including command-line tools, shell scripting, and system logs.
- Solid experience working with Docker in real-world test or production environments.
- Experience in system-level testing involving multiple integrated hardware and network components (e.g., sensors, servers, switch etc).
- Experience configuring and troubleshooting network settings (e.g., interfaces, subnets, bridges), with a good understanding of network setup to support effective testing and finding the cause of issues in complex systems
- Understanding of system parameters and how physical and environmental factors (e.g., orientation, positioning, installation angle, and external conditions) influence hardware inputs and, in turn, affect software output and overall system reliability.
- Proven experience with performance and load testing, preferably using industry-standard tools such as K6, JMeter, or similar.
- Software development experience using Golang / Python / JavaScript
- Experience with different frameworks like Selenium, Pytest, Playwright and K6.
- Proven ability to create and orchestrate manual test plans
- Experience working with Atlassian tools such as JIRA and Confluence
- A strong understanding of CI/CD practices and automation is preferred but not mandatory.
- Strong interpersonal skills to implement and shape QA procedures across the platform
