About Early Careers

The Early Careers Program is a 13-week summer program designed to provide real-world work experience to students currently pursuing a degree in a related field to FlexGen.  This program will give students interested in a career in the renewable energy and battery storage industries hands-on exposure to FlexGen projects and mentorship from industry professionals.  Upon completion of the program, students will have gained the knowledge, tools, and resources to be successful upon entering the professional world.

Position Description:

As an intern on the Application Engineering Team, there is remarkable opportunity to make critical contributions to the team at FlexGen as we enter a phase of major growth in the power systems industry. The ideal candidate is one that thrives in an entrepreneurial environment, where independent critical thinking and quick follow-up execution are highly valued. The candidate will be a member of a cross-functional team that focuses on a wide variety of engineering tasks for FlexGen’s world-leading energy storage installations. The intern will work at the FlexGen Headquarters in Durham, NC.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • Support the Application Engineering team in sizing battery systems, selecting battery and inverter OEM’s, and evaluating BESS project technical requirements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within FlexGen to provide engineering support for BESS project development and design to meet the specific requirements of various projects and clients
  • Develop propensity for making informed engineering decisions and recommendations in the context of key supply chain, commercial, political, technical, and project-specific considerations
  • Use AutoCAD to create electrical single-line diagrams and battery site layout drawings to support FlexGen’s customers’ BESS project development and design
  • Research and assess energy storage tools and models to identify opportunities for improvement

Position Requirements:

  • Student enrolled in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar technology major
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Motivation and organizational skills to manage various project and process initiatives simultaneously
  • Effective communication and documentation skills, both verbal and written
