We're seeking a Public Affairs and Strategic Communications Specialist to join our collaborative team. In this role, you'll help shape our organization's voice and messaging while supporting critical communication needs across diverse audiences.


Core Responsibilities

  • Develop inclusive branding and messaging strategies that resonate with diverse audiences
  • Create accessible communication materials following Associated Press (AP) Stylebook guidelines for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Design visually compelling and accessible materials including presentations, fact sheets, infographics, and other visual content that meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliance standards
  • Create and maintain visual brand identity elements and ensure proper implementation across all platforms
  • Ensure all digital content adheres to WCAG compliance standards to make information accessible to people of all abilities
  • Facilitate engagements and events, including planning, coordination, and execution with accessibility considerations
  • Prepare timely, accurate, and inclusive responses to media inquiries while maintaining positive relationships with the press
  • Coordinate with Department of Defense (DoD) public affairs to ensure alignment and compliance with policies and procedures
  • Create and maintain well-organized historical archives of messaging and communication materials
  • Manage and update website content following WCAG accessibility guidelines to ensure it is current, accurate, engaging, and accessible to all users
  • Conduct market research and analysis to inform communication strategies and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Develop and execute inclusive social media strategies to enhance online presence and engagement
  • Design and produce visual storytelling content for social media and web platforms using graphics, animations, and other visual elements
  • Coordinate crisis communication efforts, providing clear, accessible, and effective messaging during emergencies
  • Measure and analyze the effectiveness of communication strategies, providing insights and recommendations for improvement


Required Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Current (at least Interim) DoD Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations, Graphic Design, or related field
  • At least 3 years of related experience in strategic communications, public affairs, or a similar role
  • Strong knowledge of AP Stylebook guidelines and professional communications standards
  • Experience with and commitment to implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Experience with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) or similar tools
  • Understanding of design principles and typography with ability to create visually appealing materials that maintain brand consistency
  • Experience with implementing accessibility features in designed materials
  • Demonstrated project management skills with ability to scope efforts, create plans, and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work at location in DC area


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with cloud technology concepts and terminology
  • Experience with accessible content creation and digital accessibility best practices
  • Portfolio demonstrating strong visual design skills and accessibility implementation
  • Experience with motion graphics, video editing, or multimedia content creation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences through both text and visual elements
  • Experience working with Department of Defense or federal agency communications
  • Proficiency in using communication tools and platforms, including social media, content management systems, and analytics software
  • Experience with the U.S. Web Design System or other government design frameworks


Salary Range: $75,000- $92,500
