EHS Support is seeking a Principal/Technical Lead, Landfills and Hydrology to support major projects across contaminated land assessment and remediation, waste and landfill management, hydrogeology, geochemistry, risk assessment, and regulatory permitting and compliance. The successful candidate will be a handson technical expert with strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset. You will lead technical delivery, contribute to project strategy, support clients, and provide mentorship to junior team members. This position is based in Auckland, New Zealand (working remotely) and with the option (depending on experience) to work more widely in the Asia Pacific Region.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop conceptual site models, remedial strategies, and technical reports for regulatory submission.
- Perform and interpret geochemical and hydrogeological data, balancing practical project solutions with defensible science
- Lead projects (based on technical area of work), including contaminated site investigation/remediation, landfill assessments, environmental management and compliance, and permitting projects
- Oversee environmental risk assessments, quantitative modelling, and compliance evaluations
- Scope, plan, and manage field programs, subcontractors, and data collection activities
- Engage directly with clients to communicate findings, strategy, risk, schedules, and deliverables
- Prepare proposals, cost estimates, and project budgets, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within scope
- Support and lead technical teams — providing mentorship, peer review, and knowledge transfer
- Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams across EHS Support’s global business units
- Maintain a strong health & safety culture in all field and technical activities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline; Master’s preferred
- 20+ years of technical consulting experience supporting contaminated land (including risk assessment), landfill/waste management, mining, downstream oil & gas, industrial/manufacturing, and/or construction and infrastructure clients
- Technical expertise in at least one of the following (two preferred)
- Contaminated land investigation & remediation (including ground gas and vapour)
- Active and closed landfill management, with a focus on leachate and landfill gas management
- Waste management & environmental compliance
- Geochemistry or hydro-geochemistry
- Hydrogeology & groundwater assessment
- Human health or ecological risk assessment
- Environmental management and permitting
Preferred Qualities
- Chartered Professional (or ability to obtain)
- Direct experience managing project teams or leading client portfolios
- Familiarity with international environmental guidelines and regulatory frameworks
- Comfort leading complex, multi-site, or long-term projects
