We are currently seeking a Political Law Practice Group Manager for our Washington, D.C. office. The Political Law Practice Group Manager’s primary duty will be managing the business operations and needs of the political law group with a strong emphasis on workload management for hundreds of clients and matters; strategic planning; and lawyer productivity and development. The Political Law Practice Group Manager will also provide other support to the Political Law practice group, including planning regular trainings, internal and external meetings; and assisting with performance reviews. Minimum Required Qualifications:
The Political Law Practice Group Manager must have a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 – 7 years’ experience. JD helpful but not required. The Political Law Practice Group Manager will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will liaise closely with the Political Law Practice Group Chair. This role requires exceptional discretion in observing confidentiality of client matters and respecting the heightened sensitivity of personnel matters.
Essential Job Functions:
- Facilitates communication across the practice group to proactively identify organizational issues, identify solutions, and engage leadership as needed. This role requires problem solving and working within different stakeholder dynamics, including serving as liaison to all the partners within the practice group and the practice group chair.
- Manages internal workload for hundreds of clients and matters in collaboration with political law partners to support appropriate resource allocation and maximize staffing of clients and matters, including working with individual partners and attorneys to develop staffing and resource plans.
- Manages strategic projects within the practice group.
- Collaborates with the Finance Department within the firm to analyze productivity and provide regular analysis of workflow, productivity, headcount, and related statistics to partners. The Finance Department holds primary responsibility for AR but this role will work with that Department as needed to assist with political law department billing needs.
- Coordinates with the Practice Group Chair to plan and develop agendas for regular departmental meetings and facilitates meetings. Responsible for intra-practice group programming.
- Working in conjunction with HR and the political law partners, the PGM is responsible for managing the full life cycle of attorney performance management, including formal mid-year and end-of-year reviews; informal continuous feedback; recommendations to the partnership regarding how to best develop attorneys; and support performance improvement plans, if necessary. The PGM will work closely with the HR Department to maintain attorney personnel files. The PGM will help identify and execute plans related to performance concerns.
- Provide support to training and professional development, including supporting the internal (ELG-personnel-run training) and external (contracted support) training calendar. This role also includes recommending specific attorneys for specific professional development programs; supporting new attorney onboarding; monitor/supporting morale and engagement of attorneys.
- The PL PGM supports the partnership’s business development initiatives.
- The PL PGM will be the practice-side lead for the summer associate program. This part of the role means working with HR, operations, and the PL partnership to set up the summer program, support OCIs, help with workload assignments for the summer associates, and facilitate the administration of the summer associate evaluation and offer process.
- Supports partners with the preparation of client pitches.
- Regularly liaise with the litigation department to ensure open communication and cross-staffing on particular matters and projects.
- Support the practice group chair with practice group management needs.
- Leverage the administrative resources assigned to the practice to handle all relevant administrative tasks, including scheduling, issuance of calendar appointments and other similar tasks.
Work Environment:
- Position will operate on a hybrid schedule in a professional office environment and is currently expected to work in the office three (3) days a week (Tuesday - Thursday).
- Position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets.
- Position requires that the employee be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
Physical Demands:
- This position is primarily a sedentary position. However, some duties and responsibilities may require the employee to lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, occasionally move about to access office equipment, file cabinets, etc.
- May require employee to carry or lift items weighing up to 10 pounds.

The annual compensation range for this position is $165-190k. The salary offered may vary based on qualifications and other relevant factors.
