PORTFOLIO MANAGER

Department: Credit
Classification: Credit Management
Reports To: Credit Officer or Chief Risk Officer
Base Salary Range: $110,000–$130,000
Annual Discretionary Bonus Opportunity: 10% of base salary
Typical Delegated Credit Authority: $1,000,000–$1,500,000, subject to formal delegation

Position Summary

The Portfolio Manager is a hands-on credit manager responsible for the underwriting quality, credit performance, workflow, and professional development of an assigned credit team and/or portfolio.

The Portfolio Manager functions as a junior Credit Officer and combines direct underwriting responsibility with formal leadership of other credit professionals. The position remains actively involved in individual credit transactions while increasingly focusing on reviewing and approving transactions prepared by others, developing employees, maintaining portfolio quality, resolving escalated credit matters, and ensuring consistent application of Company credit standards.

Portfolio Managers may be assigned responsibility based on credit team, customer segment, industry, equipment type, geographic area, or other portfolio specialization.


Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Directly underwrite and decision significant, complex, or strategically important credit transactions.
  • Approve, decline, or condition transactions within assigned authority.
  • Review and provide guidance on transactions submitted by analysts and underwriters, including requests exceeding subordinate approval authority.
  • Challenge assumptions, financial adjustments, transaction structures, risk ratings, collateral conclusions, and proposed mitigants when appropriate.
  • Maintain responsibility for the overall quality, consistency, and timeliness of underwriting produced by the assigned team.
  • Manage day-to-day credit workflow and appropriately allocate transactions based on capacity, complexity, developmental opportunity, and business priorities.
  • Ensure junior personnel receive exposure to increasingly complex customers and transactions while maintaining appropriate senior oversight.
  • Supervise, coach, train, and develop assigned credit personnel.
  • Provide regular performance feedback and participate in performance reviews, advancement decisions, hiring, onboarding, and employee development.
  • Establish clear expectations regarding underwriting quality, productivity, responsiveness, documentation, and credit judgment.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for difficult transactions, policy questions, Sales/Credit disagreements, and unusual credit situations within the assigned area.
  • Maintain active awareness of portfolio performance, delinquency, risk migration, watchlist credits or vendors, concentrations, industry developments, and emerging risks.
  • Lead or participate in periodic portfolio reviews and recommend changes to risk ratings, exposure, monitoring requirements, transaction structures, or credit strategy.
  • Coordinate with Sales, Operations, Asset Management, Collections, Finance, and executive management on credit and portfolio matters.
  • Participate in customer calls, management meetings, and site visits, particularly for larger, more complex, or higher-risk relationships.
  • Assist in the administration and continuous improvement of credit policy, procedures, scoring methodologies, underwriting tools, approval processes, and reporting.
  • Lead significant departmental and cross-functional projects.
  • Support lender, investor, audit, financing, and other due-diligence or portfolio-reporting. 
  • Provide coverage for senior Credit leadership when appropriate.
  • Perform other credit and risk-related responsibilities as assigned.
  • Choice of work from home or in-office, generally following 8am – 5pm M-F schedule.
  • Provide prompt, courteous, and accurate service to sales reps and/or customers
  • Maintain familiarity with all policies, products and programs
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude
  • Attend trade shows and other events as needed


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, economics, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of approximately 4 years of applicable commercial credit, equipment finance, commercial banking, underwriting, or related experience. 6+ years preferred.
  • Advanced financial analysis, underwriting, and commercial credit skills.
  • Technical financial modeling expertise. System mindset and data analytics skills preferred.
  • Demonstrated history of sound independent credit judgment.
  • Strong ability to review, challenge, and improve the work of other credit professionals.
  • Demonstrated leadership, coaching, organization, and communication skills.
  • Ability to balance prudent risk management with commercial objectives and timely execution.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple employees, transactions, deadlines, and portfolio responsibilities.
