AWS Cloud Migration Contractor – Atlanta, GA
Engagement Type: Contract (Project-Based)
Duration: Estimated 12–18 months
Location: Atlanta, GA – Hybrid (On-site required for key activities)
On-site Expectation: 2–3 days per week at client datacenter/offices in the Atlanta metro area
Candidates must be local to the Atlanta metro area or able to commute regularly. References from enterprise migration engagements with active on-site involvement are strongly preferred.
Overview
We are seeking a hands-on AWS Cloud Migration Contractor based in or willing to commute regularly to Atlanta, GA, to assist with the execution of an on-premises to AWS migration program. This role is embedded within the client's technical team and requires frequent on-site presence to coordinate directly with datacenter staff, network engineers, and application owners during active migration waves. The ideal candidate is execution-focused, comfortable working in a datacenter environment, and has deep AWS migration tooling experience.
Key Responsibilities
On-site Engagement
- Attend on-site at client datacenter and office locations in the Atlanta metro area for scheduled migration activities, cutovers, and stakeholder meetings
- Work directly alongside internal infrastructure, networking, and application teams during hands-on migration execution
- Participate in physical datacenter decommission coordination, including server inventory validation and rack-level documentation
- Conduct in-person discovery workshops with application owners and business stakeholders
Assessment & Planning
- Assist in workload discovery and dependency mapping using AWS Application Discovery Service and third-party tools
- Support portfolio analysis to classify workloads by migration strategy (6 Rs: Rehost, Replatform, Refactor, Repurchase, Retire, Retain)
- Contribute to TCO analysis and migration wave planning
- Help identify and document risks, blockers, and dependencies ahead of each migration wave
Migration Execution
- Execute lift-and-shift and replatform migrations using AWS Application Migration Service (MGN), Database Migration Service (DMS), and related tooling
- Assist with network connectivity setup and validation (Direct Connect, Site-to-Site VPN, Transit Gateway)
- Support cutover planning, scheduling, and execution for each migration wave — including off-hours windows as needed
- Perform post-migration validation: smoke testing, connectivity checks, performance benchmarking, and rollback verification
- Coordinate with application owners during cutovers and hypercare periods
- Maintain accurate migration tracking in AWS Migration Hub and project status dashboards
Enablement & Documentation
- Document migration runbooks and standard operating procedures for each workload pattern
- Help upskill internal team members on AWS migration tooling and best practices
- Contribute to lessons-learned reviews and continuous improvement of migration processes
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in cloud infrastructure, systems engineering, or DevOps roles
- 2+ years of hands-on AWS migration execution experience, including active participation in cutovers
- Proficiency with AWS migration services: Application Migration Service (MGN), Database Migration Service (DMS), Migration Hub, Application Discovery Service
- Working knowledge of AWS core services: EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, IAM, Direct Connect, Route 53, CloudWatch
- Solid understanding of networking concepts: DNS, subnetting, firewalls, VPN, BGP fundamentals
- Experience with Windows Server and/or Linux system administration
- Ability and willingness to work on-site in Atlanta, GA on a regular basis
- Comfortable with off-hours cutover windows and occasional weekend work during migration waves
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional (or equivalent experience)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code: Terraform or AWS CloudFormation
- Familiarity with AWS Control Tower, AWS Organizations, and Landing Zone design
- Experience migrating databases: SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL migrations to RDS or Aurora
- Exposure to container workloads and modernization paths (ECS, EKS)
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools: CloudWatch, Datadog, Splunk, or similar
- Familiarity with ITSM change management processes (ServiceNow or similar)
- AWS Migration Specialty or additional AWS certifications
Engagement Details
- Contract type: Independent Contractor or Corp-to-Corp
- Billing: Time and materials
- Location: Atlanta, GA metro — on-site 2–3 days per week; remainder remote
- Team structure: Contractor works as an embedded member of the client's cloud migration team
- Reporting: Reports to client Migration Program Manager and works alongside internal cloud engineers
- Travel: Local travel within the Atlanta metro area to client sites; no significant out-of-state travel expected
