We are committed to creating a more representative democracy by building and supporting large scale, long term voter registration in communities of color. We partner with local organizations to support accessible, successful, and high quality voter registration programs that expand access to our democracy for people in communities of color.


ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY  

The campaign seeks an experienced and dedicated individual to fill the role of Senior Director of Finance, working under the Chief Financial Officer. This role involves the oversight of all financial systems and policies, including budget, accounting, compliance, financial risk identification and resilience planning, and communications with staff on the rollout of relevant policies and procedures. As a member of the senior staff team, the Senior Director of Finance will manage the Finance team and will be deeply involved in strategic planning and internal initiatives for the organization. 


WHAT YOU WILL DO IN YOUR ROLE  


Finance

  • Lead and oversee the finance function of the organization and provide direction and supervision to the finance team engaged in day-to-day internal accounting and cash management. 
  • Direct organization-wide cash flow management processes and track revenue and expenses, including oversight of monthly budget reconciliations for department leadership and identifying and mitigating enterprise risk (i.e. cash volatility, funding concentration, etc.).
  • Create, analyze, and communicate regular reports on financial performance, budgets, and projections to the Executive Team, Treasurers, Board of Directors, Audit Committee, funders, and/or other key stakeholders, with an emphasis on forward-looking risk mitigation.
  • Develop and oversee execution of strategy for internal financial systems, including Bill.com, Rippling HRIS, Time Tracking & Spend, SageIntacct, and Syft. Identify, recommend, and implement process and system improvements to ensure the highest levels of financial compliance and transparency.
  • Oversee audit, tax, and reporting functions, including preparation of monthly financial statements, 990s, and annual audit reports. Coordinate other fiscal compliance activities with outside audit firms and consultants. 
  • Collaborate with the Donor Engagement team to complete required financial reports for donors, grants, and other donor-facing materials.


Compliance

  • Ensure the highest levels of compliance with all relevant internal governance, fiscal requirements, as well as state and federal financial laws and requirements,and that all necessary business licenses and certifications, and taxes and fees related to state-specific payroll requirements, are current and adhere to all entity-specific restrictions.
  • Provide executive oversight of payroll operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness across all compensation processes. Establish and maintain a strong control environment across payroll systems, time tracking, and deductions in alignment with applicable laws and organizational policies. Serve as the senior escalation point for complex or high-risk payroll matters, partnering with Finance and People & Culture leadership to resolve issues and continuously strengthen processes and risk mitigation.
  • Develop and maintain business expense policies to ensure that staff have access to funds to make business-related purchases while ensuring compliance with GAAP standards and non-profit finance best practices.
  • Keep up to date on laws, policies, and best practices regarding nonprofit financial management to identify areas of greatest financial risk and mitigation, and collaborate with the Protective Strategies team to create and maintain compliance guidance materials.


Organizational Leadership

  • Oversee the Finance team, including direct supervision of the Senior Grants Manager and the Controller (future hire), as well as external vendors, including accountants, auditors, and payroll and benefits consultants.
  • Develop, implement, and own decisions related to budgets and goals for the department and evaluate progress and effectiveness, ensuring that the department meets its annual metrics.
  • Provide clear and accessible finance-related communications and training to staff at all levels as needed to ensure the organization’s financial health.
  • Represent the department’s vision and needs within senior leadership team spaces and serve as a thought leader within the organization.

FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES

  • Experience directly managing an annual portfolio of projects and budgets of at least $10 million to ensure that projects are completed as planned, on time, and within budget.
  • Demonstrated understanding of GAAP standards for nonprofit organizations, as well as compliance regulations regarding 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) financial management.
  • Experience successfully implementing new platforms and platform integrations, including validation testing, piloting, and launching software solutions throughout an organization. Demonstrated expertise with financial software, preferably including SageIntacct, Bill.com, Rippling Spend, and Syft.
  • Experience managing a diverse team for success, setting and achieving goals, and providing coaching and professional development opportunities for direct reports.
  • Proven ability to communicate across diverse audiences and stakeholders regarding financial initiatives and principles, especially among audiences who may not have a background in finance.


KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • 5% Travel Required: The role involves some travel, comprising 5% of the working time, to attend all staff events, conferences, etc., as needed. 
  • Location Requirement: This position is fully remote, and the candidate may reside anywhere in the United States.



Performance Metrics & Review Schedule

Your first review will be 90 days after your start date, then a six-month check-in and a

development review annually for the duration of your employment. If the results of a

reviews are unsatisfactory, more frequent reviews may be scheduled to monitor improvements. If assigned improvement goals are not reached, a warning schedule may be implemented including the possibility of termination. During each review, your performance and ability to achieve the following metrics will be evaluated:

VACCINE REQUIREMENT

Under applicable legal guidance, an employer like VRP may require its employees to be vaccinated against COVID19. The CDC has advised that vaccines are one of the most effective tools to protect employee health and prevent disease. The CDC further strongly recommends that all individuals eligible to receive a booster shot promptly do so. VRP requires all employees to be “fully vaccinated” with their vaccines against COVID19.


”Fully vaccinated” means a person has received all recommended COVID19 vaccines.


The pay range for this role is:

138,000 - 172,500 USD per year (US)
