About the role

The Manager will support Afton’s public charter school finance practice with a keen focus on financial projection modeling and fiscal data analysis. The position will engage in consulting projects with public charter schools of all sizes, with the goal of strengthening our clients’ capability to achieve and maintain long-term financial sustainability.

Recently, a Charter School CFO reflected on our work together, saying, “This project has fundamentally changed how our organization approaches financial planning, governance, and decision-making. Working closely with [Afton team members], we replaced a more traditional, static budgeting approach with a seven-year, scenario-based financial forecast that incorporates inflationary cost assumptions and long-term sustainability metrics.”

This is a full-time, remote position within the United States, requiring up to 10% travel. Afton offers competitive pay and benefits, including health insurance, paid time off, and 401(k) with company match. The salary range for the position is $120,000-$130,000 per year.

Financial Analysis and Client Service

• Collaboratively design and structure highly complex data analytic models by identifying and applying the appropriate tools.

• Conduct financial, enrollment, personnel, and other analyses to inform recommendations that will support school leaders’ financial planning and related decisions.

• Assess the long-term financial health of an organization, including significant drivers of performance and risk, through modeling, research, benchmarking, interviews, and other means.

• Efficiently and consistently review your own work and the work of others by reviewing financial and other outputs and input assumptions for accuracy, reasonableness, and feasibility.

• Develop effective communication and recommendation materials for clients.

• Communicate independently with clients on tactical project topics such as project plans, data requests, scheduling, and meeting preparation.

Maintain and Improve Core Analytical and Communication Tools

• Maintain and refine standardized financial models, templates, and analytical frameworks used across client engagements to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency.

• Identify opportunities to streamline internal processes and communication materials, introducing new tools or approaches that improve the quality and efficiency of the team's work.

Qualifications

This position requires proficiency in financial modeling, financial analysis, and communication. Successful candidates will have demonstrated the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights and can navigate multiple concurrent projects or client requests.

Our experience suggests that the following types of professional experiences and skills have prepared candidates for this work:

• A minimum of four years of relevant work experience in education or non-profit finance, financial services, management consulting, or similar roles.

• Advanced financial acumen and financial projection modeling skills, developing projections with minimal supervision, using reasonable and well-researched assumptions.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly in virtual environments.

• Intermediate project management skills, leading work streams, meeting project deadlines, anticipating challenges, and driving toward solutions.

• Strong self-awareness and commitment to continuous improvement, including the ability to give and receive feedback effectively.

• A strong interest in our client partners’ mission and communities.

• Familiarity with GASB and FASB accounting concepts.

• Alignment with Afton’s core values.
