About You

You have a breadth of experience managing merchandise operations and the supply chain that supports them, the detail-focused eye that’s required to make sure that all processes are sharp and efficient, and the entrepreneurial spirit to grow a business. You’re driven, a self-starter, and enjoy seeing the real-world impact and fun of great physical products while keeping a balanced P&L. You understand the chess community, see the opportunity that merch can have in making that community feel celebrated, and are hungry to give that feeling to others.


What you'll do

As Head of Merch, you will be responsible for growing the game of chess through merch. This includes supporting campaigns on behalf of Chess.com and questions on how our merchandise looks, feels, and enhances the experience of relating to our platform. You will have across-the-board vision into the various goals across Chess.com and will work closely with other departments on how merch can help achieve (and raise!) their campaigns. 

  • Manage day-to-day store operations, optimizing for inventory turnover, fulfillment costs, and third party vendor relationships to ensure quality above all else.
  • Analyze pricing, margins, and metrics (sales, inventory, fulfillment costs) to refine strategy and drive sustainable growth, while balancing the P&L.
  • Work closely with marketing, design, and other teams to integrate merchandising into brand campaigns, product roadmaps, and Chess.com’s other major initiatives.
  • Partner with UX/design teams to maintain a well-organized, easy-to-navigate store optimized for conversion and user experience.
  • Expand the store’s impact through creative merchandising, retail events, and gifting programs that elevate Chess.com’s brand identity.

Preferred Skills

  • 4+ years experience in managing an e-commerce and merchandise operation of $1M $ARR
  • Built merchandise operations and sales strategy to support a brand from the ground up. 
  • 2+ Years experience in metrics reporting within online merchandising, including managing a P&L. 
  • Deep understanding of the relationships between brand needs, merchandising, and manufacturing. 
  • Has experience in Amazon Storefronts, Shopify’s Platform, or similar E-commerce platforms and sales data reporting.
