About the role

  • We are looking for a Product Manager to own the development, performance, and scale of a portfolio of our banking and financial products.
  • This is not a traditional Product Manager role.
  • We need a builder and problem solver who can operate in ambiguity, understand complex banking systems, and take full ownership of turning ideas and complex problems into products that can operate and scale.
  • You will work across engineering, design, operations, compliance, finance, and external banking and payment partners. You will be expected to understand how money moves through the platform, how the underlying systems work, where things can break, and what needs to be done to build a reliable banking experience at scale.
  • Your responsibility does not end when a feature ships. You own whether it works, whether customers use it, whether operations can support it, and whether it delivers the expected business outcome.

What you'll do

  • Set up banking products, defining product rules, limits, pricing, transaction flows, controls, operational processes, and partner requirements.
  • Own the end-to-end strategy and lifecycle of a portfolio of banking and financial products, from opportunity identification and development through launch, commercialization, growth, optimization, and retention.
  • Own the commercial and financial performance of your products, including transaction volumes, revenue, pricing, unit economics, costs, margins, and profitability; use performance data to determine where to invest, optimize, reposition, scale, or retire products.
  • Develop and execute the long-term strategy for expanding products into new African and international markets, assessing the regulatory, commercial, operational, technical, and customer requirements for successful market entry and scale.
  • Work directly with clients to understand complex financial use cases and transaction flows, and partner with Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Operations to determine and establish compliant frameworks for supporting them.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of applicable banking regulations, compliance requirements, legal frameworks, and risk considerations, and incorporate them into product decisions, development, and market expansion.
  • Work cross-functionally with Engineering/IT, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Risk, Operations, Sales, Marketing, and other teams to translate business and customer needs into clear product requirements, customer journeys, controls, edge cases, execution plans, and successful commercialization.
  • Work directly with regulators, payment networks, processors, technology providers, and other financial partners to develop, integrate, and launch new products and capabilities.
  • Understand the end-to-end movement of money across your products, including transaction processing, settlement, reconciliation, exceptions, reversals, refunds, and failure scenarios, and ensure these flows operate reliably at scale.
  • Identify product, operational, technical, regulatory, commercial, or partner bottlenecks and take ownership of understanding the root cause and driving them to resolution.
  • Use financial, transaction, operational, customer, and market data to continuously evaluate product performance, identify gaps and opportunities, and drive measurable improvements in adoption, reliability, customer experience, and profitability.
  • Anticipate shifts in customer needs, markets, regulation, technology, and competition to determine what the product needs next and drive its long-term evolution, competitiveness, and scale.

KPIs You’ll Own

Success will be measured against clear quarterly and annual targets across six areas:

  • Revenue, Profitability & P&L: Deliver agreed revenue, gross margin, cost-to-serve, and product profitability targets, with monthly performance tracking and corrective actions for material variances.
  • Transaction Growth & Product Usage: Deliver quarterly targets for transaction value, transaction volume, active customers, product adoption, usage frequency, and retention across the products you own.
  • Product & Operational Performance: Maintain agreed targets for transaction success rates, processing and settlement times, reconciliation accuracy, platform/partner reliability, exception rates, refunds, reversals, and manual intervention.
  • Customer Experience & Market Performance: Improve defined customer experience and retention metrics each quarter, using customer behavior, complaints, support trends, competitor performance, and market data to identify and resolve measurable product gaps.
  • Market Expansion & Commercialization: Deliver agreed annual and quarterly milestones for new markets, currencies, payment rails, client use cases, and banking capabilities, from regulatory and operational readiness through launch and measurable adoption.
  • Product Evolution & Future Growth: Maintain and execute a rolling product roadmap informed by product performance, customer needs, market shifts, regulatory changes, and emerging technologies, with measurable quarterly outcomes tied to new revenue opportunities, efficiency improvements, competitive positioning, or long-term scale.

Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in product management, product development within banking, fintech, payments, or financial services, with direct ownership of banking or financial products through development, commercialization, and scale.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Banking & Finance, Economics, Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline. A relevant Master’s degree is an advantage.
  • Relevant professional certifications such as ACIB/CIBN or FRM, or equivalent banking, finance, risk, or investment qualifications are an advantage but not required..
  • Product or Agile certifications such as CSPO, PSPO, SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager, or Pragmatic Institute are beneficial but not a substitute for demonstrated banking and product execution experience.
  • Strong commercial and financial management experience, including product P&L ownership, financial modelling, pricing, unit economics, revenue forecasting, cost management, and profitability analysis with relevant tools.
  • Strong knowledge of banking risk, credit, compliance, and regulatory frameworks, including KYC/KYB, AML, transaction monitoring, sanctions, consumer protection, data/privacy requirements, and the regulatory considerations involved in launching and operating financial products.

This Role Is Probably Not for You If

  • You need clearly defined problems, detailed instructions, or established playbooks before you can make progress.
  • You see Product Management primarily as writing PRDs, managing backlogs, running ceremonies, and coordinating delivery rather than owning outcomes.
  • You are uncomfortable owning the commercial performance of a product, including revenue, pricing, costs, profitability, transaction growth, and customer economics.
  • You rely on Engineering, Operations, Compliance, Risk, or Legal to do the deeper thinking for you rather than understanding the technical, operational, financial, and regulatory implications of your product.
  • You consider your responsibility complete at launch or accept “blocked,” “not possible,” or “not my responsibility” without investigating the constraint and driving a path forward.
  • You are primarily focused on today's requirements rather than anticipating how customer needs, markets, regulation, technology, and competition will shape what the product needs to become next.

Interview Process

  • Talent Screening — Introductory conversation about your experience and fit for the role.
  • Product & Banking Interview — Discussion with the Head of Product covering such as product experience, banking knowledge, and problem-solving.
  • Case Study & Presentation — Practical scenario assessing product thinking, execution, commercial judgment, and regulatory considerations.
  • Final Interview — Conversation with leadership focused on ownership, judgment, and overall fit.
