The CMT Lab Manager is responsible for the daily operation of the construction materials testing laboratory, including staff supervision, workflow management, and ensuring accurate and timely test results. This role is accountable for production, communication, and execution of quality requirements in coordination with the Quality Control Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, train, develop and mentor laboratory staff
- Ensure all staff demonstrate competency in required test methods and calculations
- Ensure certifications are obtained and maintained as required
- Maintain clear communication with PMs, FSM, QC Manager, and leadership
- Provide weekly updates on lab workload, issues, and performance
- Proactively escalate issues and implement solutions
- Conduct coaching, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions as needed
- Manage daily lab workflow and prioritize testing
- Ensure timely completion of testing and reporting
- Coordinate workload with FSM and PMs
- Maintain accurate job sheets and production tracking
- Ensure all testing complies with ASTM, AASHTO, and project specifications
- Implement procedures defined by the Quality Management System (QMS)
- Address deficiencies identified by QC Manager in a timely manner
- Support audits, proficiency testing, and accreditation activities
- Ensure all laboratory data sheets are fully completed before staff leave the lab
- Verify all results are supported by recorded raw data
- Ensure calculations are performed and verified (manual or software-supported)
- Ensure all test data is accurately assigned to the correct project for billing
- Maintain calibration schedules and ensure equipment readiness
- Ensure laboratory equipment is properly maintained and verified
- Maintain sufficient inventory of supplies and materials
Skills, Knowledge, Expertise
- B.S. in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, Soil Science or similar field of study from an accredited university is nice to have
- Certifications required or willing to obtain within a reasonable timeframe:
- ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician,
- ACI Aggregate Base Testing Technician
- Nuclear Gauge Certification
- NICET or any other relevant or applicable certifications.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a CMT or Geotechnical laboratory setting or related work.
- Knowledge of industry standards and requirements, laboratory analyses, and interpretation of laboratory data
- Knowledge of CCRL & AASHTO Accreditation for Laboratories
- Familiarity with geotechnical studies and drilling methods is nice to have
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and /or move 50 pounds.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to walk over uneven terrain and active construction sites.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to climb ladders or through uneven terrain and construction sites.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
