Product/Ops Data Scientist

About Reverb

Reverb is the largest online marketplace dedicated to buying and selling new, used, and vintage musical instruments. Since launching in 2013, Reverb has grown into a vibrant community of buyers and sellers all over the world. By focusing on inspiring content, price transparency, musician-focused e-commerce tools, a music-savvy customer service team, and more, Reverb has created an online destination where the global music community can connect over the perfect piece of music gear.

We love working at Reverb because we’re making the world more musical—through our marketplace and through Reverb Gives, which provides musical instruments to youth music education programs. We were named a “Best Place to Work” by Built in Chicago and a “Top Workplace'' by the Chicago Tribune.

About the role

As a Data Scientist on Product & Operations, you'll combine analytics and applied machine learning to improve how the Reverb marketplace works for buyers and sellers. You'll be the embedded data partner to product managers, engineers, and Customer Support operations leaders, and you'll own the production ML models that help power the marketplace.

You'll thrive in this role if you're a curious, hypothesis-driven thinker. You translate ambiguous product and operational questions into focused analyses, balance rigor with speed, and turn complex findings into clear, well-reasoned recommendations with a point of view that drive decisions.

This is a full-time hybrid position located in Chicago, reporting to the Director of Analytics. Tuesdays are our all-company in-office day. The Analytics team  frequently comes to the office Wednesdays and Thursdays to collaborate, and you’re welcome to join them as often as works for you.

The expected starting base pay range for this role is $115,000-$145,0000 plus a 10% bonus target.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical and strategic advisor to Product and Customer Support operations teams, using exploratory analysis and root-cause investigations to uncover the drivers of buyer, seller, and operational trends and shape the roadmap
  • Ground product and operational development in testable hypotheses, estimating impact before launch and measuring it after with the right method for the question (e.g., A/B testing, pre/post, difference-in-differences, causal impact)
  • Own and improve production machine learning models: building high-signal training datasets, managing retrains, evaluating model performance, and translating tradeoffs into business terms
  • Build the core metrics, dashboards, self-serve reporting, and enable LLM-assisted analysis that keeps partners informed on how the business, and our models, are performing

Requirements

  • 3+ years of applied experience in a product analytics or data science role partnering with product and/or operations teams at an product/tech company ( eCommerce, B2C, or marketplace company strongly preferred)
  • Track record of partnering with product and operations stakeholders to frame decisions and influence what gets built
  • Proven experience using hypothesis-driven thinking to identify and test new opportunities in product and operations
  • Hands-on experience building, evaluating, and maintaining ML models in a business setting, with an emphasis on creating clean, high-signal data
  • A pragmatic approach to modeling and analysis: you start with the simplest solution that works and prioritize business impact over sophistication
  • Strong proficiency of Python and SQL, and experience building actionable reporting in BI tools (Looker, Amplitude)
  • Working knowledge of experimentation and causal methods (A/B testing, difference-in-differences, propensity score matching, causal impact) and the judgment to pick the right tool for the question

Additional Information

Remote-eligible roles (as indicated in the location header of each job description) are available in all U.S. states except Alaska and Hawaii. Remote roles are currently only available within the U.S. unless otherwise specified in the specific job description.
