Mission:
We are seeking a technically rigorous and customer-focused Battery Storage Applications Engineer to bridge the gap between our advanced energy storage technology and real-world deployment. This is a strategic, hands-on role critical to our mission. You will translate customer requirements into optimized system designs, validate performance across diverse use cases, and ensure our solutions deliver measurable value in the field. Acting as the technical backbone of the commercial process, you will support sales, marketing, product, and engineering teams with modeling, integration guidance, technical sales support, and application expertise.
Position Targets/Outcomes:
Lead the Technical Pre-Sales Process: Serve as the primary technical partner to Sales throughout the commercial lifecycle—from initial qualification through contract execution. Shape deal strategy by translating customer use cases, financial objectives, and operating constraints into technically optimized, commercially compelling storage solutions.
• Translate Market Opportunities into Bankable Proposals:
· Lead technical discovery sessions to define duty cycles, performance guarantees, augmentation strategies, and integration requirements.
· Develop robust energy storage models that quantify lifetime performance, degradation, efficiency, availability, and ROI.
· Produce detailed technical proposals and bid packages, including system sizing, single-line diagrams, performance assumptions, and compliance documentation.
• Strengthen Technical Sales Enablement:
· Partner with Sales to respond to RFPs, RFIs, and technical due diligence requests with speed, accuracy, and credibility.
· Support customer meetings, executive presentations, and contract negotiations as the technical authority.
· Develop standardized tools, calculators, and modeling frameworks that improve proposal consistency, cycle time, and win rates.
· Manage customer facing technical documentation and work alongside technical teams to generate documentation as necessary for project proposals.
· Develop and/or review System designs, Single Lines, Layouts, Containerization, Performance guarantees, Availability guarantees, etc.
Amplify Marketing & Market Positioning:
· Collaborate with Marketing to develop application notes, white papers, case studies, and technical content that articulate differentiated value.
· Translate complex engineering advantages into clear, benefit-driven messaging for target segments (utility-scale, C&I, microgrid).
· Provide technical input for product launches, webinars, conference presentations, and thought leadership initiatives.
Accelerate Cross-Functional Alignment:
· Serve as a bridge from the Commercial team to Product and Engineering, ensuring customer requirements and emerging use cases inform the roadmap.
· Support commissioning readiness and early deployment to protect performance assumptions made during the sales process.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate likely spent the first part of his or her career building deep technical foundations in power systems, battery engineering, PV + storage integration, or grid-connected infrastructure—either at a leading OEM, EPC, developer, utility, or technology-driven energy company—where he or she developed rigorous analytical skills and a strong safety mindset. He or she has since operated in a fast-paced, customer-facing or scaling environment, applying that technical depth to commercial pursuits and supporting projects from early-stage feasibility through commissioning and field optimization.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related technical discipline.
• 5+ years of progressive experience in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including system design, applications engineering, integration, technical sales support, and service.
• Demonstrated expertise designing multi-MW scale energy storage systems, with strong command of both DC and AC electrical design principles.
• High level of technical aptitude spanning from battery cell fundamentals through C&I and utility-scale battery systems.
• Strong working knowledge of secondary battery chemistries, degradation mechanisms, system architectures, and operational limitations across diverse duty cycles.
• Practical experience with balance-of-system (BOS) equipment, including inverters, medium-voltage transformers, combiner boxes, DC/DC converters, EMS, and BMS platforms.
• Strong knowledge of NEC and applicable regulatory codes and standards for PV and energy storage installations, including NFPA 70 (NEC), IEEE 1547, UL 9540, UL 1741, and other relevant global standards.
• Solid understanding of how energy storage and PV projects are constructed, commissioned, and brought online.
• Ability to interpret operational data, apply statistical analysis techniques, and produce clear, actionable reports.
• Working knowledge of commercial contracts, performance guarantees, and how technical design and proposal assumptions must support contractual obligations.
• Familiarity with competitive energy storage products in the market and the ability to clearly articulate differentiated technical value.
• Proven ability to operate cross-functionally across engineering, product, sales, marketing, and field teams.
• Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, manage multiple priorities, and maintain accountability for deliverables.
• Willingness and ability to travel 10–20% to support customer engagement, project development, site validation, and industry events.
Must Have:
• Technical Depth & Range:
You are equally comfortable discussing electrochemical behavior at the cell level and reviewing single-line diagrams for multi-MW grid-connected systems. You can move seamlessly between modeling software and a job site.
• Pre-Sales & Commercial Orientation:
You understand that technical precision underpins revenue. Your expertise turns technical jargon into marketing differentiation. You support proposals that stand up to RFP scrutiny, independent engineer review, and contractual performance guarantees.
