SENIOR UNDERWRITER

Department: Credit
Classification: Senior Credit Professional / Technical Leader
Reports To: Portfolio Manager, or other designated Credit leader
Base Salary Range: $95,000–$120,000
Annual Discretionary Bonus Opportunity: 10% of base salary
Typical Delegated Credit Authority: $750,000–$1,000,000, subject to formal delegation

Position Summary

The Senior Underwriter is an experienced commercial credit professional and technical leader responsible for underwriting and approving significant and complex equipment finance transactions. This position is expected to have material exposure to and expertise within specific equipment finance industry segments. 

The Senior Underwriter is expected to be capable of analyzing substantially any credit opportunity presented to the Company and forming a well-supported independent judgment regarding creditworthiness, transaction structure, collateral support, and appropriate risk mitigation.

In addition to personally underwriting transactions, the Senior Underwriter is responsible for strengthening underwriting quality across the department through coaching, review, technical leadership, portfolio awareness, and development of junior credit personnel.


Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Lead the underwriting of significant, complex, or higher-risk commercial equipment finance transactions.
  • Perform comprehensive analysis of borrower and guarantor financial condition, cash flow, leverage, liquidity, repayment capacity, projections, capital structure, contingent liabilities, and global financial support.
  • Evaluate complex corporate structures, ownership groups, affiliates, acquisitions, customer concentrations, industry risks, and other material qualitative factors.
  • Evaluate collateral quality, equipment values, useful life, secondary-market considerations, advance levels, transaction structure, guaranties, and other risk mitigants.
  • Develop appropriate credit structures and conditions that balance business opportunity with prudent risk management.
  • Approve, decline, or condition transactions within assigned authority.
  • Provide senior-level recommendations on transactions requiring Portfolio Manager, Credit Officer, CRO, or committee approval.
  • Serve as an escalation point for challenging underwriting questions, unusual transactions, financial-analysis issues, policy interpretation, and credit structuring.
  • Review and challenge analyses prepared by junior credit professionals when appropriate.
  • Mentor and train analysts in financial analysis, underwriting methodology, credit writing, risk identification, transaction structuring, and decision-making.
  • Promote consistency and quality in underwriting standards throughout the department.
  • Participate in customer calls, management discussions, and customer or collateral site visits.
  • Maintain current knowledge of economic conditions, equipment markets, industries, credit trends, portfolio performance, and emerging risk issues.
  • Participate in portfolio reviews and assist with identification of deteriorating credits, concentrations, adverse trends, or emerging risks.
  • Assist in developing or improving credit policies, procedures, underwriting tools, models, templates, and departmental processes.
  • Lead or materially contribute to significant special projects and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Perform other credit and risk-related responsibilities as assigned.
  • Choice of work from home or in-office, generally following 8am – 5pm M-F schedule.
  • Provide prompt, courteous, and accurate service to sales reps and/or customers
  • Maintain familiarity with all policies, products and programs
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude
  • Attend trade shows and other events as needed


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, accounting, economics, or a closely related field.
  • Approximately 3–10 years of applicable commercial credit, equipment finance, commercial banking, underwriting, or related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of accounting, financial analysis, cash-flow analysis, commercial credit, and transaction structuring.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate complex commercial borrowers and transactions.
  • Strong understanding of collateral and equipment finance risk.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor others and improve underwriting quality through technical leadership.
  • Strong independent judgment and willingness to appropriately challenge assumptions or proposed structures.
