Canada Rocket Company

Senior Electrical Design Engineer

About Canada Rocket Company

Canada Rocket Company is developing Canada's first medium-lift launch vehicle.

We are a team of veterans from SpaceX, Blue Origin, Rocket Lab, ArianeGroup, Pangea Propulsion, Tesla, and MDA, bringing over a century of combined launch and space systems experience back to Canada.

Our mission is to provide reliable, independent access to space for Canada and its allies in a rapidly expanding global market.

Our approach is defined by pragmatic engineering:

  • We utilize a single 700 kN engine that scales from light- to medium-lift via engine clustering.
  • We lean on simple, proven technologies to reach orbit faster, avoiding the pitfalls of complex or novel designs.
  • We test early and often, catching problems on the bench instead of at the pad.

Backed by $20M in funding secured within our first four months, including the largest all-Canadian seed round in the sector and an $8.3M Department of National Defence grant, we are moving with the speed and institutional backing required to meet Canada’s orbital launch needs.

About the role

Canada Rocket Company is building a sovereign launch capability for Canada. As our first Electrical Design Engineer, you will own the design of high-reliability, flight-grade electrical hardware starting with our light-lift rocket R1 and scaling that work through successive vehicles as CRC grows. This is a senior, hands-on foundational role. You will set the standards, build the processes, and deliver hardware that flies. As the team expands, you will be expected to help hire and shape the electrical design team around you.

This is not a role for someone who wants a defined lane. It is a founding technical position at a company building something Canada has never built before. If you want to own critical hardware from first principles to first flight and help build the team that eventually scales around you, this is the role for you.

What you'll do

  • Define electrical architectures for complex, safety-critical systems including power distribution, sensor signal conditioning, actuator drive circuitry, and data interfaces
  • Execute full lifecycle development of electronic components and subsystems, including requirement gathering, schematic capture and layout, prototyping, debugging, mechanical integration, environmental testing, data analysis, and production implementation.
  • Build the electrical design processes, tools, and documentation standards that will scale with the team
  • Provide production support for launch vehicle avionics, including root-cause failure investigations and quality enhancements.
  • Develop, test, and characterize electronic sub-circuits, including digital, power, and analogue sensing circuits.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Over 5 years of experience  designing, building, or testing circuit boards or other electronics.
  • Proven experience in designing hardware from concept through to production, with an emphasis on test and validation
  • Understanding of electronic circuits, design principles, and SMT manufacturing techniques.
  • Familiarity with interfaces and sensors, including power supplies, oscilloscopes, serial devices, and instrumentation.

Preferred

  • Passion for spaceflight and curiosity for electronics in high-reliability applications.
  • Proficiency in Altium.
  • Familiarity with basics of mechanical design, thermal design, vibration dynamics, and spacecraft design.
  • Experience with circuit board layout, especially for switching power converters or high-speed digital applications.
  • Experience designing switching power converters, power magnetics, analog control loops, solid state load switches, motor inverters, EMI/EMC compliance, or sensor signal conditioning circuits.
  • Experience in environmental testing, such as vibration, shock, thermal, and TVAC as well as familiarity with relevant standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create formal test plans and materials for distribution to external parties.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in fast-paced and autonomous project environments.
  • Programming experience in Python and/or C/C++.
