The Fabrication Chargehand is responsible for leading a team of fabrication personnel on a day-to-day basis, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.


The successful candidate will provide hands-on leadership on the shop floor, coordinate daily activities, and support the Fabrication Supervisor in achieving departmental goals relating to Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, and Team Performance.

Key Responsibilities

Safety

  • Lead by example and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure all fabrication activities are carried out safely and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Monitor PPE compliance and safe working practices.
  • Participate in safety inspections, audits, and toolbox talks.
  • Report hazards, incidents, and near misses promptly.

Problem-Solving from Drawings

  • Assist in reading and interpreting technical drawings to ensure work is completed accurately.
  • Support the supervisor in identifying and preventing potential issues related to design or fabrication by reviewing drawings and resolving discrepancies before fabrication begins.

Material & Equipment Management:

  • Ensure that the team has the required materials, tools, and equipment for production tasks.
  • Coordinate with the supervisor to manage stock levels and report any shortages or equipment malfunctions.

Production & Delivery

  • Allocate work and manage daily priorities within the fabrication team.
  • Ensure work is completed in line with production schedules and project requirements.
  • Monitor progress and escalate issues that may impact delivery.
  • Coordinate labour and equipment resources effectively.
  • Support daily production meetings and visual management systems.

Quality

  • Ensure all fabrication work meets drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
  • Promote a Right First Time culture.
  • Identify and correct quality issues before they progress through production.
  • Support quality inspections and customer audits when required.
  • Minimise rework and fabrication defects.

Team Leadership

  • Lead and motivate fabrication personnel to achieve daily targets.
  • Provide training, coaching, and support to team members.
  • Promote good housekeeping and workplace organisation.
  • Foster teamwork, accountability, and a positive working environment.
  • Support new employee onboarding and skills development.

Continuous Improvement

  • Support Lean Manufacturing and 5S initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to improve productivity, workflow, and efficiency.
  • Participate in improvement projects and problem-solving activities.
  • Promote best practices throughout the fabrication area.


Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Experience in fabrication, welding, structural steel, heavy engineering, or manufacturing.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising a team.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of fabrication processes and quality standards.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.

Desirable

  • Trade qualification in fabrication, welding, mechanical, or related discipline.
  • Experience in modular construction or manufacturing environments.
  • Forklift, MEWP, or lifting equipment experience.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
