Job Overview 

Democracy Docket is seeking a Video Lead & Producer to lead our video department and oversee the creation of timely, news-driven video content that informs and engages our audience. This role is ideal for a talented producer with strong news instincts and someone excited about translating complex legal and political developments into engaging, accessible content for a broad audience. 


The Video Lead & Producer will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive video strategy (primarily focused on long-form, YouTube), working in close collaboration with the social team, managing a team of producers and editors, and overseeing the end-to-end production process — from ideation to publishing. The role requires strong editorial judgment, excellent production skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments, including editorial, growth, and social media, and will report to the Director of Audience Growth.


Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of Democracy Docket’s original video production, with a particular focus on YouTube.
  • Pitch, produce, and develop video content ideas aligned with the organization’s mission and editorial priorities.
  • Work closely with Democracy Docket founder Marc Elias to produce commentary and interview YouTube videos. 
  • Collaborate with reporters, editors, and the news division to translate news and reporting into engaging video formats.
  • Manage a team of producers and editors.
  • Review, assign, and provide feedback on productions. 
  • Edit videos as needed to support content goals.
  • Use analytics to guide strategy. 
  • Oversee video department logistics, including managing equipment, software, and production schedules.
  • Partner with the social media team to manage shared workflows to efficiently and effectively package and product video content across social platforms.
  • Work with the Subscription & Product team to meet audience growth and distribution objectives.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in video production, preferably in a news, media, or political context.
  • Strong editorial instincts
  • Experience using video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, Riverside, etc.) 
  • Proven ability to lead a team and manage production workflows.
  • Experience developing platform-specific content, with a particular focus on long-form YouTube videos. 
  • Strong understanding of digital media trends and audience engagement strategies.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Passionate about voting rights and democracy.


Work Environment
This is a full-time role based out of our Jersey City office. We currently operate on a hybrid schedule, with remote work on Mondays and Fridays and in-office days on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Salary Range: $115,000-$125,000
