Summary of the Position

Falvey insurance Group is one of the largest Marine Insurance MGAs in the country and was founded on the pillars of Technology and Operational Excellence. The Business Analyst role is critical to the expanding strategy of the group as the position is expected to leverage problem-solving, communication, and process design to advance industry leading, in-house software systems that support underwriting operations.

The position involves acting as an advocate, point of contact, and internal consultant for one primary underwriting line of business. This role will also provide backup coverage for analysts assigned to other underwriting lines of business and assist with general support across all underwriting lines. The specific underwriting line of business assignment will depend on business need, interest, performance, and relationships built.

The Business Analyst role will be expected to establish a deep understanding of the processes and personnel of their assigned underwriting line of business and become “embedded” within the team. From a position of shared understanding, the Analyst can design solutions to day-to-day underwriting problems, identify areas for process improvements, and advocate for their underwriting partners throughout the organization (Software Development, Data Analytics, Marketing, etc.).

Position Functions

The role will have the following main responsibilities:

  1. Participating in the design of large-scale strategic projects that impact underwriting lines of business
  2. Maintaining an ongoing understanding of assigned underwriting partners' goals, priorities, concerns, and daily processes
  3. Conducting Process identification, documentation, and suggesting operational improvements
  4. Participating in and coordinating the User Acceptance Testing phase for system updates that impact assigned underwriting lines of business
  5. Running regular check-ins with assigned underwriting partners to communicate statuses and confirm priorities
  6. Supporting the efficiency of proprietary internal systems through:
    • Intaking issue submissions (bugs, questions, feature requests, etc.) from assigned underwriting partners and clarifying the Problem, Impact, and Potential Solutions
    • Following prioritization and process guidelines to determine a solution path
    • Writing Change Requests for internal software development team
    • Communicating updates and status on individual problems 
  7. Secondary responsibilities include:
    • Using Business Intelligence platforms to review underwriting KPI's and data integrity
    • Evaluating project requests in terms of underwriting goals, business goals, and objectives
    • Providing backup analyst coverage for other underwriting lines of business as needed
    • Assisting with general support needs across all underwriting lines of business

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Strong desire to establish relationships and understand the goals, concerns, and objectives of stakeholders throughout the business 

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to contextually switch between technical and plain language. Experience creating process flows, wireframes, decision trees, other methods of effective visual communication. 

Excellent comprehension skills to efficiently develop a connected understanding of business processes and goals. This includes learning via informal conversations with company leaders, completed projects, end user interviews, and individual experimentation/replication of issues.  

Problem solving skills are necessary for this position, as numerous complex scenarios will be directed to the candidate on a daily basis. We are looking for an individual who enjoys getting to the bottom of complex problems and ultimately coming up with effective solutions.

Experience with Business Intelligence platforms (Power BI, Tableau, Domo) a plus 

There are many routes to being successful within this role and a candidate is not expected to have all of these characteristics. There will be ample time for on the job training and learning. In essence, we are looking for a person who is interested in a dynamic role and cultivating a generalist skillset.


Other Requirements

Bachelor's degree is required. Additional business work experience is preferred.


Physical Requirements

Must be able to sit and work quietly for extended periods of time, operate a computer, and answer and communicate on a telephone.

Business-casual fast paced multi-tasking office environment.


Hours of Operations

This position supports our marketing efforts internationally. This position's work hours are Monday through Friday 9am - 5pm, in a hybrid work environment. Our hybrid environment is 3 days within our business-casual office environment. Of these 3 days in the office, Wednesday and Thursday are required, and employees may work from home the other 2 days. Our employees choose their schedule. This position requires occasional flexibility for working additional hours to accomplish project objectives.
