Mytra

Systems Engineering Lead, Safety Risk Management

About Mytra:

We’re creating an entirely new way to solve the most ubiquitous problem in industry - moving and storing material. We’re applying robotics and distributed software to create a new class of product for this $1T market. We’re focused on the supply chain industry first. The industry is in a massive bind with the continued growth of e-commerce, sharp rise in costs, and supply chain disruptions. What has been a “sleepy” industry for decades is now at the epicenter of sustaining the global economy.

About the Role:

Mytra is seeking a Systems Engineering Lead, Safety Risk Management to own and drive our end-to-end risk management framework for robotic systems in warehouse environments. This role is purpose-built to work in close partnership with our Systems Engineering Architect, Safety who owns the functional safety architecture and ISO 13849-1 compliance strategy- while you own the risk management discipline; hazard identification, risk analysis, risk control evaluation, and safety case integrity across the full product lifecycle.

You will serve as the primary author and steward of our risk management documentation, ensuring that every identified hazard is traceable from analysis through mitigation, validation, and field deployment. Equally important, you will build the risk management infrastructure - processes, tools, and training - that scales with the organization as we grow our product deployments. This role requires on-site presence at our Brisbane, CA headquarters.

Responsibilities:

Risk Management Framework & Documentation

  • Own the end-to-end risk management process in accordance with ISO and applicable IEC standards, from initial hazard identification through residual risk evaluation and risk acceptance
  • Author, maintain, and continuously improve the system-level risk file, ensuring full traceability from hazard analysis through risk controls, verification testing, and validation evidence
  • Develop and standardize risk management documentation including HARAs, FMEAs, FTAs, and risk control hierarchies that are rigorous, audit-ready, and usable by cross-functional engineering teams
  • Define risk acceptance criteria and residual risk thresholds in alignment with applicable standards and business context

Cross-Functional Hazard Analysis & Risk Reduction

  • Lead and facilitate hazard analysis and risk assessment sessions (HARA, HAZOP, FMEA) with systems, controls, firmware, mechanical, and software teams throughout the product development lifecycle
  • Evaluate proposed risk control measures, engineering safeguards, administrative controls, PPE for effectiveness and compliance, and partner with the Safety Architect to ensure architectural safety measures are correctly represented in the risk file
  • Identify and escalate safety-critical scenarios, common cause failure risks, and systematic failure pathways that require architectural response
  • Collaborate with field operations and deployment teams to capture field-observed failure modes and feed them back into the risk management process

Safety Validation & Verification Support

  • Develop and manage safety verification and validation plans that demonstrate risk control effectiveness, including test protocol design, acceptance criteria, and evidence collection
  • Support fault injection testing, diagnostic coverage verification, and hardware fault tolerance analysis in coordination with the Safety Architect and test engineering teams
  • Ensure commissioning, periodic testing, and maintenance procedures are risk-informed and properly documented for field use

Standards, Compliance & Organizational Capability

  • Serve as the subject matter expert on risk management standards and domain-specific requirements for industrial robotics and warehouse automation
  • Build and deliver risk management training and mentorship programs that equip cross-functional engineers to identify and escalate safety issues early
  • Develop scalable frameworks, templates, and tooling that allow risk management practices to keep pace with growing product complexity and deployment volume
  • Represent Mytra's risk posture to customers, integration partners, and certification bodies as needed

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in systems engineering, quality engineering, or functional safety, with deep expertise in risk management for complex, safety-critical systems
  • Proven track record conducting and leading hazard analysis and risk assessment activities (HARA, FMEA, FTA, HAZOP) for multidisciplinary hardware/software systems
  • Strong command of risk management requirements, with hands-on experience authoring and maintaining structured risk files and safety cases
  • Experience translating hazard analyses into implementable hardware and software requirements, and verifying that risk controls have been correctly implemented
  • Ability to lead cross-functional safety sessions and communicate risk concepts clearly to engineers, leadership, and external stakeholders
  • Strong mechatronics or systems engineering foundation familiarity with control architectures, fault detection mechanisms, and fail-safe design principles
  • B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Background in autonomous mobile robots, industrial machinery, medical devices, or warehouse automation environments where human-machine interaction creates safety-critical scenarios
  • Experience working with AI/ML-enabled autonomous systems and the unique hazard identification and risk control challenges they introduce
  • Experience supporting third-party certification audits (TÜV, UL, FDA, Notified Body) and presenting to regulatory or certification bodies
  • Certified Functional Safety Expert (CFSE), TÜV Functional Safety Engineer, or equivalent professional certification

A Final Note:

If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply — even if you don’t check every box. At Mytra, we build bots, but we hire humans. We value thoughtful challengers who communicate with clarity and respect, and we’re lifelong learners committed to getting better every day.
