Role Overview
The Performance Improvement Consultant partners directly with client teams to diagnose performance challenges, translate business priorities into actionable interventions, and drive measurable outcomes. Embedded within client organizations, this role goes beyond traditional L+D, operating as a trusted advisor focused on performance improvement, change adoption, enablement, and sustainment tied directly to business results.

This consultant leads with diagnosis, uses data to inform recommendations, and stays engaged through execution to ensure initiatives actually deliver. The role is ideal for practitioners who can move fluidly between strategy and implementation, influence senior stakeholders, and operate inside complex environments.

Key Responsibilities

Performance Diagnosis + Business Alignment

  • Conduct structured performance analyses to identify root causes of business challenges (e.g., capability gaps, process breakdowns, system issues, behavioral or adoption barriers).
  • Partner with client leaders to clarify business objectives, success metrics, and desired outcomes.
  • Translate ambiguous business problems into clear performance hypotheses and solution paths.

Solution Design + Intervention Planning

  • Design integrated performance solutions that may include learning, enablement, change management, process improvements, tools, and reinforcement strategies.
  • Ensure proposed interventions are outcome‑based, feasible within the client context, and aligned to broader enterprise initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with client stakeholders and cross‑functional partners (e.g., HR, Operations, Sales, IT).

Embedded Execution + Delivery

  • Operate as an extension of the client team, supporting execution, decision‑making, and day‑to‑day progress of performance initiatives.
  • Guide implementation activities such as pilot rollouts, leader enablement, communication strategies, and adoption efforts.
  • Adjust recommendations in real time based on data, stakeholder feedback, and evolving business conditions.

Change, Enablement + Sustainment

  • Apply change management principles to drive stakeholder buy‑in and sustained behavior change.
  • Support leaders and managers in reinforcing new ways of working through coaching, tools, and performance support.
  • Help establish measurement and feedback loops to track adoption, performance lift, and business impact.

Measurement + Outcomes

  • Define success metrics tied to business goals (e.g., productivity, revenue, quality, speed, engagement).
  • Partner with clients to assess effectiveness, report progress, and refine approaches based on results.
  • Maintain focus on value realization rather than activity completion.

Skills + Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in performance consulting, business consulting, organizational effectiveness, change management, or related advisory roles.
  • Proven experience diagnosing performance issues and designing outcome‑based interventions beyond standalone training.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to understand enterprise priorities and operational realities.
  • Experience working embedded within client teams, preferably in Fortune 500 or large matrixed organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and navigate complex stakeholder environments.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and adapting approach as client needs evolve.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in L+D, organizational development, management consulting, or transformation initiatives.
  • Experience supporting sales, operations, leadership, or enterprise‑wide transformations.
  • Familiarity with performance measurement methodologies, change frameworks, and enablement strategies.
  • Experience working in staff augmentation or long‑term client‑embedded consulting models.

What Success Looks Like

  • Clients view you as a trusted partner who helps critical initiatives deliver real results.
  • Performance solutions are clearly tied to business outcomes—not just learning activity.
  • Stakeholders experience meaningful adoption and sustained behavior change.
  • Engagements expand from diagnostic efforts into broader implementation and execution support.
