Mechatronics - Control Systems Co-op Student (Winter 2027)

About Us

At 4AG Robotics, we’re wired for solving tough problems - and mushroom harvesting with robots is about as tough as it gets. We solve the critical labour shortage for farms by building robots that pick, trim and pack mushrooms.

We are a team of builders that like to move fast and embrace the uncertain process of innovation - because every breakthrough comes with a few mistakes along the way.

If you love tech, thrive on innovation, and have a passion for building and bringing it to life in the real world in a commercial space, you’ll find your spot here. Join us and help reshape the future of farming with grit, brains, and a team that gets things done.

About The Role

As a member of the team, you will contribute to challenging automation and robotics problems as we continue to develop and commercialize large-scale robotic systems.

This is a hands-on role where you’ll work alongside experienced engineers to design, build, test, troubleshoot and improve our robotic systems. You’ll have the opportunity to work directly with our robots during testing and validations, gaining experience with how robotic systems perform in real-world environments.

During your term, you may have the opportunity to visit customer sites to support testing, troubleshooting, commissioning, and learning how our robots operate in production environments.

What You Will Work On

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Developing and maintaining C++ code for robotic/data systems
  • Collaborating with team members on algorithm development for perception and control
  • Writing unit tests and performing code reviews to ensure high-quality software
  • Assisting with integration and testing on real robots in the lab and at farms
  • Supporting data collection, analysis, and visualization for system improvements
  • Working with modern development tools including Git and Docker in a Linux environment
  • Participating in daily stand-ups, release planning, and design discussions
  • Support the development, integration, and testing of control systems for robotic equipment.
  • Develop and modify PLC programs using Structured Text (ST).
  • Build and test functional prototypes and subsystems to validate design concepts and system performance.
  • Run hands-on testing with our robots to identify issues, validate improvements, and prove system reliability.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, controls, and system-level issues and work with the broader engineering team to find solutions.
  • Help develop and document product operational and safety procedures.
  • Gather feedback from engineers, technicians, and other stakeholders to improve our systems.
  • Support commissioning and testing activities, including potential travel to customer sites.
  • Assist with project planning and scheduling to help keep development and testing activities moving forward.

Who You Are

Some combination of the following skills, abilities, experience, and attributes will help you thrive in this role:

  • Currently studying Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related program.
  • Experience with C++.  Knowledge of PLC programming in Structured Text is a bonus.
  • Interested in robotics, automation, controls, and hands-on engineering.
  • Enjoys getting out from behind the computer and working directly with equipment and robots.
  • Comfortable troubleshooting problems and figuring things out when there isn’t an obvious answer.
  • Able to work collaboratively with engineers, designers, technicians, and project managers.
  • Has a safety-first mindset and understands the importance of safe practices when working around machinery and robotic systems.
  • Can communicate technical concepts, challenges, and solutions clearly with team members.
  • Is solutions-focused and willing to contribute ideas and challenge existing approaches.
  • Enjoys learning new tools, technologies, and systems.
  • Takes initiative and is comfortable working in a fast-moving environment where priorities can change.

Why This Role Matters

At 4AG Robotics, we’re redefining what’s possible in agriculture through robotics, computer vision, and AI. The work you do will directly contribute to building reliable, efficient systems that make mushroom harvesting safer and more sustainable. We value our people and the innovation they bring.

  • Competitive pay: We offer competitive compensation, and depending on
your experience, this position has a monthly salary range of $4,333 to
    $5,373 per month

    timesheets.
  • Time to recharge: Paid vacation and statutory holidays.
  • Growth mindset: Ongoing learning and development encouraged
    year-round.
  • Relocation support: Financial assistance available for students
moving to Salmon Arm, BC, for the term.
  • An on-site gym at HQ.

What We Believe

If you’re the type who likes to take chances, move at speed, and see your ideas come to life, you’ll feel right at home here. At 4AG, we’re not big on rules for the sake of rules - we’d rather trust you to make bold calls, keep it real with your team, and turn imagination into something game-changing. This isn’t a place to play it safe; it’s a place to build, break, fix, and build again - while having a great time doing it.
