Arcadia

Senior Staff Engineer

Who We Are

Arcadia is the AI-powered energy intelligence platform for businesses. We replace fragmented tools and manual workflows with one platform to pay utility bills, buy energy, and advance sustainability — across every location, at enterprise scale.

Trusted by Fortune 2000 companies, Arcadia combines unified data, AI-powered analytics, and expert advisory to help enterprise teams save money, mitigate risk, and cut carbon.

We deliver this through three comprehensive solutions:

  • Utility Bill Management: Automating the entire utility bill lifecycle — from data capture and validation to payment processing and auditing.
  • Energy Procurement Advisory: Bringing together comprehensive data, AI-powered analytics, market expertise, and a strong partner network to make sophisticated procurement options accessible to all.
  • Sustainability Reporting — Verified emissions data with seamless integration into leading sustainability platforms.

Tackling the world's most complex energy challenges requires diverse thinking. We're building teams of people from different backgrounds, industries, and disciplines — united by a belief that energy management should be simple, intelligent, and a genuine driver of business value.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking a Senior Staff Engineer (L6) to join Core Engineering in India as a senior individual contributor operating across squads rather than inside one. You will be the technical subject matter expert our teams pull in when the problem is hard, the design is ambiguous, or the blast radius is large — moving between our Acquisition, Extraction and Storage, and Presentment squads as priorities shift.

This role exists because our squads are shipping faster than our design review capacity. We have driven deep adoption of AI-assisted development across India engineering, and the constraint has moved: teams can now produce architecture and implementations quickly, but senior validation of those designs concentrates on too few people. You will be one of a small number of engineers trusted to review and approve significant designs, and to raise the design ceiling of the engineers around you.

You will not have direct reports. Your influence comes from technical depth, design judgment, and mentorship rather than reporting lines. This is a hybrid, remote-first role anchored in Chennai, working daily with US-based engineering and product partners.

Our engineering values are deeply ingrained in our culture — you can read more about them here.

What You’ll Do

  • Act as the floating technical SME across Core Engineering squads, embedding where the hardest current problem is and moving on once the team is self-sufficient
  • Review and approve component and service designs, sharing design authority with squad leads so that architecture approval stops being a single-person bottleneck
  • Own the design of complex, cross-service changes spanning multiple owners — provider data model changes, extraction pipeline evolution, migrations, and event contract changes
  • Write production code on the critical path. This is a hands-on role; you will be in the repositories, not only in documents
  • Set and raise the bar on non-functional requirements: performance, scalability, reliability, observability, and cost across the services you touch
  • Validate AI-generated designs and implementations, reviewing agent output for architectural soundness, hidden coupling, and failure modes the model did not consider
  • Advance how we do AI-assisted engineering: spec-driven development, reusable skills and subagents, prompt patterns that hold up against our codebase, and automation of recurring work
  • Mentor Staff Engineers and below through pairing, design review, and constructive feedback, measurably lifting the technical judgment of the squads you rotate through
  • Lead major refactoring and technical debt reduction across legacy platform services, sequencing the work so that delivery continues
  • Debug and resolve complex production issues that cross service, data, and infrastructure boundaries
  • Write the design documents, architecture decision records, and runbooks that make your decisions durable. Confluence is our single source of truth
  • Partner with US engineering leads on cross-region initiatives, representing India engineering in architecture discussions

What Will Help You Succeed

The following list reflects our current technology stack. You will need meaningful overlap or analogous experience, but not an exact match.

Must-haves

  • 10–12+ years in software engineering, with a track record of owning technically complex, multi-service work end to end
  • Deep production expertise in Python, plus working fluency in a second ecosystem such as Java and Spring Boot or TypeScript/Node
  • Strong distributed systems and event-driven architecture experience — queues, streams, idempotency, eventual consistency, and backpressure
  • Hands-on AWS (ECS/EKS, S3, Lambda, Kinesis or equivalent) and containerized deployment on Kubernetes
  • Solid relational data modeling and query tuning (MySQL, Postgres), plus search or analytical stores (OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, Snowflake)
  • Demonstrated ability to review other people’s designs and improve them. You can point to architectures that are better because you were in the room
  • Practical, daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude Code or Cursor, and of spec-driven development, with a clear view of where they help and where they mislead
  • Credibility without authority: able to influence squads you are not part of, and to mentor senior engineers without managing them
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and comfort operating across India and US time zones
  • Comfort with ambiguity and rotation — the willingness to be reassigned to the highest-value problem rather than owning one fixed surface

Nice to have

  • Utility, energy, or fintech data domain experience
  • Web data acquisition at scale (Puppeteer, headless Chrome, anti-bot mitigation)
  • Document extraction, OCR, or LLM-based extraction pipelines
  • dbt and analytics engineering on Snowflake
  • Experience modernizing legacy monoliths into services while keeping delivery running
