Lab Manager

Atlas Data Storage is pioneering the future of information technology by harnessing the unique properties of synthetic DNA for next-generation data storage solutions. We are seeking an experienced Lab Manager to support and scale Atlas Data Storage’s laboratory operations. This role is responsible for overseeing biology, chemistry, and engineering labs focused on DNA synthesis, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations. The Lab Manager will work closely with scientific staff, facilities, and external partners to support laboratory infrastructure and growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of biology, chemistry, and engineering laboratories, including support for cleanroom activities as needed.
  • Maintain organized, safe, and compliant laboratory environments; promote best practices across all lab users.
  • Ensure scientists and engineers have appropriate space, equipment, and resources to perform their work effectively.
  • Manage hazardous waste programs, contracted disposal services, and maintain the SDS library.
  • Serve as Atlas’s Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) lead, coordinating with external consultants, leading internal safety programs, managing inspections, and chairing monthly safety meetings.
  • Oversee preventive maintenance programs, service contracts, and repairs for laboratory equipment.
  • Support shared lab services, including glass wash, autoclave operations, reagent stocking, and coordination with supply chain on consumables and gases.
  • Partner with facilities teams on laboratory planning, expansion, and construction initiatives.
  • Report to the Senior Director of Protein Development.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a related field, with 5–10 years of laboratory management experience.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to support and guide diverse technical teams.
  • Proven experience leading EH&S programs and serving as a primary compliance coordinator.
  • Working knowledge of chemical handling, SDS management, and waste storage and disposal requirements.
  • Familiarity with common laboratory equipment (e.g., LC/MS, centrifuges, fume hoods, glass washers, DI systems) and their maintenance.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal teams, contractors, and vendors.
  • Cleanroom experience preferred.
  • Hands-on equipment maintenance experience, supply chain/kanban systems, and reagent preparation are pluses.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented approach with the ability to balance operational support and compliance.
  • Proficiency with computer-based systems for maintenance tracking, purchasing, SOP development, and documentation.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Work will be performed onsite in office and laboratory space located in South San Francisco.
  • Mobility: Must be able to move about the laboratory and office environment regularly. This includes standing and walking for extended periods, often up to 6–8 hours per day.
  • Manual Dexterity: Must have fine motor skills and steady hands to handle delicate instruments, operate laboratory equipment, pipette accurately, and perform repetitive benchwork with precision.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds occasionally, such as boxes of lab supplies or equipment.
  • Visual Acuity: Must have sufficient visual acuity to read small print on labels, instrument displays, and computer monitors. Close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus are required.
  • Environmental Conditions: Frequently exposed to typical laboratory conditions, including biological samples, chemicals, and reagents. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles as required.
