Role Overview

Patient billing collectors will work to collect patient balances due after services are rendered. They will interface with patients, attorneys, contracted network providers, and other departments within the organization. The patient-billing collector will actively pursue balances via outbound calls and respond to balance requests to resolve and close claims in the system.

Role Responsibilities


Generate outbound communications

  • Make phone calls to patients with balances to obtain additional information that may include health insurance coverage information, and attorney information
  • Communicate to patients, options to resolve their unpaid balances
  • Contact attorneys via phone and/or written communication to protect unpaid balances and keep attorneys apprised of total balance due

Monitor claim inventory & inbound call queue

  • Maintain assigned claim queues to meet department goals
  • Meet call queue service levels such as answer time, hold time and quality requirements

Update and document system

  • Note all collection activity in the system
  • Route claims to appropriate department utilizing system tools
  • Follow policy and procedures to ensure accuracy

Contribute to a positive culture and work environment

  • Attend team meetings and trainings staying current with workflows and processes
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for improvement
  • Collaborate with team members to solve complex claims
  • Work with other departments when appropriate to resolve issues
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Role QualificationS

  • Minimum one-year experience in a Customer or Patient billing environment
  • Inbound or outbound call center experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of Auto and Workers’ compensation rules and regulations a plus
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing
  • Exceptional phone soft skills, including listening skills, inflection, tone, and ability to guide a conversation
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish) a plus
  • Superior PC skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Basic accounting skills
  • Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Quick learner
