Join the Mission to Make Water Better

Payments Operations Lead

About Klir

We're hiring to make water better.

Klir is the Operational Data Hub that connects water utility programs, data, and decisions into one connected operational system. It replaces fragmented tools and siloed data with a unified view of Drinking Water, Wastewater, and Industrial Pretreatment operations — giving teams the clarity, visibility, and continuity to act sooner and with more confidence.

Backed by Insight Partners, Bowery Capital, and Spider Capital, Klir is one of the fastest-growing companies in the digital water space.

About Klir Connect (Payments & Financial Services)

Right now, the people and providers that utilities depend on in the field — backflow testers, liquid waste haulers, industrial users — work across a maze of disconnected portals, phone calls, platforms and paperwork just to submit a compliance report or pay a fee. Klir Connect is a new business unit inside Klir, built to fix that and drive efficiencies to this neglected ecosystem.

Klir Connect  sits alongside Klir's core hub and rather than replacing anything: the billing systems, GIS, and metering platforms utilities already run on stay exactly where they are. Klir Connect is the connected, utility-branded front door that sits on top — where a tester or hauler submits a report and pays the invoice and a convenience fee in one place.

The payment gateway is live today, built on Stripe, with a water utility  processing the first live payments through it for their backflow testing program. Backflow is the starting point with a large number of other use cases such as Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) and Liquid Waste Hauling (LWH), to follow, with a broader marketplace vision — provider rebates, one-click applications, utility approvals — further down the road.

We've hired a VP to lead this unit, joining in August, and we're now building the founding team around them.

Location:This position is hybrid (2 days in office) and based in Toronto — we're also open to remote candidates based in the US, given Klir Connect's early customers are US utilities.

Role Description

Launching a payment platform that enables reliable, consistent and effective   is one thing. Keeping it running cleanly and providing best in class customer service — every payment reconciled, every receipt sent, every new utility onboarded the same repeatable way — is another. This role exists to be the practical, a get-it-done mentality, someone that is customer first and will set the tone for the quality expectations of Klir Connect.  This person will  take what's working today with our first live customers and turn it into a real, scalable operating process as we bring on more utilities and more programs.  This role will be the primary point between payment operations and the broader Klir Connect go to market motion.

What you'll own

Payments operations, primary responsibility

  • Merchant and Partner Onboarding - define the processes and manage the setup of new merchant accounts and payment partners within Stripe, including underwriting requirements, banking details, and go-live checks, so utilities and programs can accept payments without last-minute surprises.
  • Gateway operations — own the day-to-day health of the Stripe-based payment flow — reconciliation, failed payments, disputes, receipts, and the automatic confirmation emails testers and haulers rely on.
  • Reconciliation Management / Support - own daily and monthly reconciliation between Stripe, Klir Connect, and utility/program records; investigate and resolve discrepancies, chargebacks, and failed or duplicate payments; be the point person when a tester, hauler, or utility accounting resource requires assistance reconciling.
  • Utility and program onboarding — run the practical steps of bringing a new utility or program onto Klir Connect — starting with backflow, then FOG and liquid waste hauling — including data migration, configuration, and testing before anyone processes a live payment.
  • Support enablement — work with CX to fold Klir Connect payment questions into Klir's existing support channels, so testers and property contacts always have somewhere to go when something goes wrong.  Be the primary escalation point for payment related inquiries.
  • Financial coordination — be the connective tissue between Klir Connect and Finance on convenience-fee reporting, payout timing, and recordkeeping.
  • Process documentation — turn what's currently being figured out one customer at a time into a documented, repeatable onboarding playbook ahead of our next wave of utility rollouts.
  • Compliance and audit trail — keep transaction records, receipts, and communications organized and defensible, consistent with Klir's SOC 2 controls and the security bar of the utilities and billing systems we integrate with.
  • Product input - identify customer friction points and value add opportunities from onboarding, reconciliation, and support into clear, prioritized feedback for Product/Engineering and assist with testing as needed.

The competencies we're hiring for

We care far more about how you think and operate than what your résumé says your last title was.

  • Operational clarity — you take a messy, first-time process and turn it into something repeatable, documented, and clean.
  • Comfort with money and detail — reconciliation, receipts, and payment records need to be right every time, and you double-check without being asked.
  • Judgment under ambiguity — you make good calls when the answer isn't obvious, and you know when to act, when to wait, and when to escalate.
  • Cross-functional coordination — you'll work across engineering, finance, CX, and utility customers, often within a single week.
  • AI fluency — you use AI tools to draft support responses, summarize reconciliation issues, or speed up documentation, and you bring that instinct to the team.
  • Steady under early-stage conditions — no two weeks look the same as an early hire on a brand-new business line, and that energizes you rather than unsettling you.
  • Bias for action - you value speed, getting things done and improving the product and experience vs. prolonged analysis.

What we're not prescriptive about

You don't need a specific "payments operations" title on your résumé. What matters is that you can point to evidence — from wherever it comes — that you bring order to ambiguous, detail-heavy work under real time pressure.

Backgrounds we'd be open to: payments or fintech operations, revenue operations, implementation or customer onboarding, customer operations, or a strong early-stage generalist who can demonstrate the competencies above.
