The Role

As a Data Engineer at Orderly Wellness, you'll be the primary owner of our data platform, connecting Salesforce, Ontraport, Rails, Stripe, and Twilio into a BigQuery warehouse that powers business decisions. Our three core systems use different identifier schemes and weren't designed to talk to each other — solving that is the heart of this role.

We're a small, cross-functional team. For example, in the course of one week you might find yourself building pipelines, creating Looker dashboards, and perhaps even doing some ad-hoc analysis. If you've been the sole data engineer responsible for making messy real-world systems work together, you'll thrive here (although you won’t actually have to go it alone!)

Our Stack

·         Warehouse:                    BigQuery

·         Transformation:           dbt (1.8+)

·         Ingestion:                         Heroku Connect, Fivetran, custom Python

·         BI:                                          Looker

·         Cloud:                                Google Cloud Platform (GCP) - BigQuery, GCS, Workload Identity Federation

·         Languages:                   SQL, Python, Ruby

·         CI/CD & Version Control:    GitHub Actions; Git

·         Data Quality:                 dbt tests, Elementary, custom automation

·         Orchestration:             GitHub Actions (evaluating dedicated tooling)

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and extend ELT pipelines connecting five business systems into BigQuery via Heroku Connect, Fivetran, and custom ingestion
  • Design and maintain dbt models following star schema patterns (staging  → intermediate → marts), including incremental strategies and testing
  • Solve cross-system identity resolution across three CRMs with different identifier schemes
  • Build and maintain data quality frameworks: automated testing, schema drift detection, and pipeline observability
  • Define and implement reverse ETL workflows to push warehouse-derived segments back into Salesforce and Ontraport for marketing and operations teams
  • Build and maintain Looker dashboards to surface key metrics; provide ad hoc analysis for strategic decisions
  • Collaborate with engineering to ensure reliable data replication from production systems
  • Evaluate orchestration tooling and scale the platform as the team grows

Required Qualifications

  • 4+ years of experience –or- a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or similar and 3 years of experience
  • Strong proficiency in SQL
  • Experience with dbt - you've built and maintained dimensional models, not just written queries
  • Experience wiring together multiple SaaS systems into a warehouse (bonus if you've dealt with Salesforce and/or legacy CRM data)
  • Comfort with Python for scripting, automation, and custom ingestion
    • Familiarity with BigQuery or similar cloud warehouses
  • Pragmatic approach to data quality - you build tests and monitoring, not just dashboards
  • Ability to work autonomously and make decisions with incomplete information - you'll often be the only person who knows the data layer end to end
  • Strong understanding of data modeling concepts (dimensional modeling, normalization, schema design) in a Kimball style data warehouse
  • Experience working in cloud environments (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Haves)

  • Experience with Heroku Connect, Fivetran, or similar CDC/replication tools
  • Familiarity with Ruby and Rails (this is the stack our fulfillment system is written in)
  • Experience with Looker development (LookML)
  • Experience with Entity resolution across systems with mismatched identifiers
  • Experience with GCP infrastructure (IAM, GCS, Workload Identity Federation)
  • Experience in digital health, telemedicine, pharmacy, or a related field
  • Experience at a high-growth startup

Core Competencies/Skills

  • Ability to work autonomously and make decisions with incomplete information - you'll often be the only person who knows the data layer end to end
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to present findings to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving environment with ambiguous problem definitions
