Principal Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer (DFM)

Now, we’re entering a new phase of growth and are looking for a skilled Principal Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer, DFM to join our team, contributing to the next wave of system and tool development for our upcoming product lines. The ideal candidate will thrive working in an innovative and fast-paced work environment, have excellent critical thinking skills, and will play a pivotal role in the expansion of the Manufacturing Engineering team at PDW.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Optimize mechanical designs for manufacturability, inspectability, and assembly (DFM/DFA), inspectability, and manual / automated assembly to support rapid and effective new product introduction (NPI)
  • Collaborate with Core Engineering to drive and support DFX, TSA throughout the NPI process.
  • Apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to high-precision, tolerance-critical components using GD&T (ASME Y14.5) to enable cost-effective manufacturing for high-volume scalability.
  • Ensure alignment with Core Engineering on design intent and critical characteristics for performance, with Quality for inspectability and supplier capability, and Manufacturing Engineering on production process rates.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers to validate component designs, optimize manufacturing processes, and reduce costs and lead times.
  • Create and manage CAD models and detailed engineering drawings using SolidWorks to support current and new products and fixtures, jigs, and tooling.
  • Generate ECOs supporting design improvements using SolidWorks and PLM.
  • Support the design and development of tooling, jigs and fixtures to improve for manufacturing and production capability and reproducibility
  • Support change and configuration management, engineering design best practices, engineering and manufacturing bills of materials, dispositions, effectivity, and implementation planning and execution.
  • Participate in design reviews ensuring engineering rigor and cross-functional alignment.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote engineering best practices throughout the product lifecycle to design and manufacturing teams.
  • Continuously support the improvement of design processes and standards to enable cost effective manufacturing scalability.

Requirements

  • BSME/MSME, or a minimum of 15+ years relevant design experience with emphasis on DFM/DFA for precision electro/mechanical assemblies and components in an aerospace, semiconductor or robotics equipment, or similar industry.
  • Proven expertise in DFM/DFA, TSA, GD&T (ASME Y14.5) for precision mechanical systems and components.
  • Strong background in design for manufacturing, inspection, and precision assembly.
  • Adept in CAD tools, and PLM systems. SolidWorks and Duro a plus.
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical inspection methods and capabilities (ie: CMM, optical, manual gauges, micrometer, bore gauges, profile testers, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills; working across teams (Eng, SC, Quality, and suppliers)
  • Strong project management skills driving continuous improvement.
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance or higher, as required

 


Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Ability to sit, stand, bend, reach, climb, and move about regularly throughout the day and lift / carry up to 25 pounds. Must have manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment.

This position typically operates in a standard office setting and manufacturing environment. This role requires use of standard office equipment and may involve exposure
