Data Engineer

About Propela Tech

Propela Tech is a healthcare-focused advisory and technology firm that helps organizations streamline operations, unlock their data, and scale more efficiently through custom-built tools. We’re a team of technologists, former healthcare operators, and strategic thinkers who understand the real-world complexity of running healthcare businesses—and we build solutions that actually work.

What Matters Most

  • Find the data, even when no one knows where it lives.
  • Build a reliable path to move it from source to destination.
  • Turn messy, disparate data into something usable and trustworthy.
  • Stay with a problem until the data gets where it needs to go

What We’re Looking For

This role reports directly to our VP of Engineering, Daniel Pries.

We are hiring a Data Engineer to solve complex data problems across healthcare environments—often starting without a clean or obvious path to the data. A significant part of this role is investigative. You will determine where the right data lives, research how it can be accessed, understand the limitations of source systems and APIs, and figure out the best path to move data from point A to point B. Once the data is accessible, you will build the pipelines and transformation logic needed to make it usable, including significant mapping, normalization, reconciliation, and restructuring across disparate systems.

This is a hands-on execution role. A client may come to us knowing the outcome they need, but not where the data lives or how to get it there. You will take that ambiguity and work backwards: find the source, figure out how to access it, understand what the data actually means, and build a reliable path to its destination. If you enjoy digging into messy datasets, researching unfamiliar systems, and staying with a problem until it is solved, you will thrive here.

Key Responsibilities

Data Discovery & Source Research

  • Investigate client systems to identify where required data lives and how it can be accessed
  • Research APIs, databases, vendor documentation, file structures, and other potential data sources to determine the best approach
  • Reverse-engineer unfamiliar datasets and source-system structures when documentation is incomplete
  • Determine how to move data between systems when there is no predefined integration path

Pipeline & Integration Engineering

  • Build and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines across APIs, databases, flat files, SFTP, healthcare systems, and third-party platforms
  • Troubleshoot complex data and integration issues from source through destination

Data Transformation, Modeling & Quality

  • Perform complex data transformation, mapping, normalization, cleansing, reconciliation, and restructuring
  • Build data models and structures to support operational applications, integrations, reporting, and analytics
  • Build validation, monitoring, and data-quality processes to ensure data is complete, accurate, and reliable

Collaboration & Documentation

  • Work closely with Solution Architects, Engineers, Product Managers, Analysts, and client stakeholders to translate business needs into workable data solutions
  • Document data sources, mappings, transformation logic, pipelines, and technical architecture

Data & Technical Stack

This is a hands-on technical role that requires strong, practical experience with the tools and techniques used to find, move, and shape data across complex, multi-system environments.

Required:

  • 2+ years of experience in data engineering, data integration, or a related engineering role
  • Strong SQL skills and experience working with complex relational datasets
  • Experience building ETL/ELT pipelines and data integrations
  • Python or another language commonly used for data engineering
  • Cloud data platforms and infrastructure
  • Data models and data warehouses
  • Integrating APIs and third-party data sources
  • Understanding of data quality, validation, monitoring, and performance

Strongly Preferred:

  • Healthcare technology or healthcare data experience
  • EHR/EMR, practice management, payer, or other healthcare operational systems
  • Familiarity with HL7, FHIR, claims, clinical, eligibility, or payer data
  • Microsoft/Azure data technologies
  • Power BI or similar analytics platforms
  • Consulting, professional services, or other environments working across multiple client systems

Working Style:

  • Strong research and problem-solving skills, particularly with unfamiliar systems or poorly documented data sources
  • Ability to work independently, navigate ambiguity, and follow a problem through to resolution
  • Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
