Pythian

DevOps Engineer

Why Pythian:

At Pythian, we are experts in strategic database and analytics services, driving digital transformation and operational excellence. Pythian, a multinational company, was founded in 1997 and started by ensuring the reliability and performance of mission-critical databases. We quickly earned a reputation for solving tough data challenges. We were there when the industry moved from on-premises to cloud environments, and as enterprises sought more from their data, we expanded our competencies to include advanced analytics.

Today, we empower organizations to embrace transformation and leverage advanced technologies, including AI, to stay competitive. We deliver innovative solutions that meet each client’s data goals and have built strong partnerships with Google Cloud, AWS, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP, and Snowflake. The powerful combination of our extensive expertise in data and cloud and our ability to keep on top of the latest bleeding edge technologies make us the perfect partner to help mid and large-sized businesses transform to stay ahead in today’s rapidly changing digital economy.

Why you:

This role sits on one of the largest database estates in the world, supporting one of our biggest clients — the kind of scale most infrastructure engineers never get direct access to. Changes made here don't touch one system, they touch a fleet, so the impact of good (and bad) engineering is outsized.

We're looking for an infrastructure/DevOps engineer to own the AWS platform our clients' RDS and Aurora databases run on — not the databases' internals. You'll manage the Terraform and CI/CD pipeline (GitLab, Harness) that provisions them, maintain the supporting tooling that handles user and schema management, and be the escalation point when a team's Terraform, pipeline, or process has gone wrong. A big part of the job is making that go wrong less often: improving documentation, and building out the tooling that automatically routes support queries to the right place instead of everything landing on-call.

If this is you, and you wonder what it would be like to work at Pythian, reach out to us and find out!

What you will be doing:

Support & Troubleshooting:

Act as the escalation point when clients or internal teams break their Terraform, break their pipeline, or don't follow documented process — diagnose the actual problem and get them unblocked.

Write clear Root Cause Analysis (RCA) reports for significant incidents.

Infrastructure & Automation:

Build and maintain Terraform for provisioning AWS database infrastructure (RDS/Aurora), and the GitLab/Harness pipelines that deploy it.

Maintain the supporting tooling that manages database users and schemas, ensuring it stays correctly integrated with the databases it manages.

Automate recurring operational work with Python or Go.

Apply AWS security best practices — IAM roles, KMS encryption, Security Groups, Network ACLs — across managed environments.

Enablement & Tooling:

Build and improve the incident-response tooling so support queries get automatically routed to the right place, rather than landing on the person who is on call.

Own and improve documentation — runbooks, operational guides, disaster recovery procedures — so people stop making the same mistakes.

What we need from you:

  • Experience with AWS and Terraform in a production environment
  • Provisioning AWS infrastructure through a CI/CD pipeline (GitLab, Github, Harness, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with RDS/Aurora operations — backup/restore, replication, disaster recovery — at the infrastructure level
  • Solid understanding of AWS security and compliance controls.
  • Experience automating operational tasks with Python or Go.
  • Proficiency in AWS networking (VPC, Subnets, Transit Gateways).
  • Comfortable being the person people come to when infrastructure or a pipeline is broken — clear communication under pressure, no hand-holding needed to trace a symptom to its root cause.
  • Nice to have: Docker, Vault, ProxySQL, and general relational database familiarity (MySQL or similar).

What you will receive:

  • Love your career: Competitive total rewards package. Blog during work hours; take a day off and volunteer for your favorite charity.
  • Love your work/life balance: Flexibly work remotely from your home, there’s no daily travel requirement to an office! All you need is a stable internet connection.
  • Love your coworkers: Collaborate with some of the best and brightest in the industry!
  • Love your development: Hone your skills or learn new ones with our substantial training allowance; participate in professional development days, attend training, become certified, whatever you like!
  • Love your workspace: We give you all the equipment you need to work from home including a laptop with your choice of OS, and an annual budget to personalize your work environment!
  • Love yourself: Pythian cares about the health and well-being of our team. You will have an annual wellness budget to make yourself a priority (use it on gym memberships, massages, fitness and more). Additionally, you will receive a generous amount of paid vacation and sick days, as well as a day off to volunteer for your favorite charity.
