Position Overview
The Associate Attorney will support the firm’s FEHA department in handling employment litigation and pre-litigation matters under the supervision of senior attorneys while providing high-quality legal advocacy and client service. Responsibilities include drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, managing discovery, participating in depositions, mediations, and court appearances, and assisting with matters involving claims for wrongful termination and other torts, claims under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (“FEHA”), California Family Rights Act (“CFRA”), the California Labor Code, and other sources of authority.
Key Responsibilities
Case Management & Advocacy
- Handle various phases of employment litigation from pleadings through settlement;
- Appear in court, depositions, mediations, and other litigation proceedings;
- Assist with developing case strategy and maintain regular client communication;
- Manage discovery, including written discovery, document review, meet-and-confer efforts, and review of employee/personnel records;
- Prepare for and participate in party, witness, and expert depositions;
- Assist with mediation preparation, settlement evaluations, and damages analysis;
- Work toward independently managing a caseload of 20+ matters under the guidance of a managing attorney.
- Regularly meet with senior attorneys for case reviews, strategy sessions, and other team meetings.
Legal Research & Analysis
- Perform advanced legal research using LexisNexis and other resources; analyze and apply case law, statutes, and regulations to litigation strategy;
Document Drafting & Filing
- Draft pleadings, discovery requests and responses, motions, briefs, mediation statements, settlement agreements, and other pre-litigation and litigation materials;
- Independently handle law and motion practice, including but not limited to motions to compel, demurrers, and motions for summary judgment/adjudication;
- Review, edit, and finalize legal correspondence and court filings.
Team Collaboration & Leadership
- Coordinate with paralegals, legal assistants, and support staff to ensure accurate file management and compliance with court deadlines;
- Collaborate with senior attorneys on litigation strategy and trial preparation;
- Mentor junior associates, clerks, and support staff by providing guidance on drafting, litigation strategy, and client interaction.
Administrative Duties
- Participate in firm-wide initiatives, committee work, professional development, and other special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in the California State Bar.
- 3 or more years of relevant litigation experience in a law firm.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, PDF software, and legal research platforms.
- Strong drafting, analytical, and oral advocacy skills.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills and ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in employment law, FEHA claims, including discrimination, harassment, retaliation, disability accommodation, leave laws, wrongful termination, and related matters.
- Familiarity with case management systems (e.g., FileVine), and Document Generation.
