Product Manager, Billing & Collections
About Zealie LLC
Zealie is a fast-growing, technology-enabled services company revolutionizing the revenue cycle management (RCM) landscape in the Behavioral Healthcare industry. Our clients include substance use disorder treatment centers, addiction recovery centers, and mental health treatment facilities dedicated to saving lives daily. Through our proprietary technology, we deliver data analytics and revenue prediction tools that empower our clients to make strategic business decisions for growth. Internally, we've automated numerous processes to enhance the efficiency of our billing teams.
Position Description:
We are seeking a Product Manager with deep Billing and Collections expertise to own the billing and collections experience in our flagship product, Zion RCM. This is a dedicated, department-aligned role: you will be the product owner for our Billing and Collections teams, the largest operation at Zealie and the source of the most product requests.
Our engineering team ships quickly with AI-assisted development. The constraint is no longer how fast we write code, it is how fast we know exactly what to build. You will close that gap by sitting with billers and collectors, understanding their workflows in detail, finding the edge cases, and turning them into clear, dev-ready requirements.
You will become the company's product expert in billing and collections, while keeping a view of the full revenue cycle so that what you build fits cleanly with intake, verification of benefits, utilization review, payment posting, and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Product Ownership for Billing & Collections:
- Own the roadmap, requirements, and backlog for billing and collections functionality in Zion RCM.
- Serve as the single product point of contact for the Billing and Collections departments, and the go-to expert for how Zion supports their work.
- Requirement Gathering & Analysis:
- Shadow billers and collectors, map current workflows end to end, and identify manual steps, rework, and failure points.
- Write clear, complete PRDs, user stories, and acceptance criteria that engineering can build from without back-and-forth, covering edge cases such as payer-specific rules, corrected and replacement claims, secondary billing, and timely filing limits.
- Produce UX mockups for new screens and workflow changes.
- Automation & Efficiency:
- Partner with operations leadership to identify and prioritize automation opportunities in claim submission, claim status follow-up, denial management, appeals, and A/R work queues.
- Define success metrics for each initiative, such as days in A/R, clean claim rate, denial and overturn rates, cash collected per collector, and cases handled per person, and track results after launch.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Work closely with engineering to translate requirements into user stories and technical specifications.
- Coordinate with product managers who own adjacent areas so that billing and collections changes do not create silos or break downstream processes.
- Keep executive leadership informed on priorities, progress, and impact.
- Agile Delivery:
- Participate in Scrum ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, demos, and retrospectives.
- Prioritize the backlog by business impact, and review and accept completed stories against acceptance criteria.
- Stakeholder Engagement:
- Train billing and collections teams on new functionality and gather feedback after release.
- Triage and resolve product issues raised by the departments you support.
- Industry & Market Awareness:
- Track payer, clearinghouse, and regulatory changes that affect billing and collections, including EDI and electronic prior authorization developments, and translate them into product requirements.
Requirements:
- Educational Background:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. An MBA or advanced degree is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Product Manager, Product Owner, or Business Analyst on RCM or medical billing software.
- At least 5 years of hands-on or leadership experience in medical billing, A/R follow-up, or collections. You should be able to work a denial yourself.
- Behavioral Health RCM experience (substance use disorder and mental health, across levels of care such as detox, residential, PHP, IOP, and outpatient) is strongly preferred.
- Proven track record of shipping software that measurably improved billing or collections outcomes.
- Domain Expertise:
- Deep knowledge of the claim lifecycle: charge capture, coding, claim scrubbing, submission, adjudication, payment posting, denials, appeals, and patient responsibility.
- Working knowledge of UB-04 and CMS-1500 claim forms, revenue codes, CPT and HCPCS codes, and modifiers.
- Familiarity with X12 EDI transactions (837I/837P, 835, 276/277, 277CA) and with CARC and RARC codes.
- Understanding of commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare payer rules, in-network and out-of-network billing, coordination of benefits, and timely filing.
- Product Skills:
- Strong at writing detailed PRDs, user stories, and acceptance criteria. Comfortable using AI tools to speed up requirements and documentation work.
- Strong understanding of Agile methodologies, particularly Scrum. Product Owner certification is a plus.
- Experience with JIRA and a design tool such as Figma.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills:
- Comfortable with RCM data and reporting: A/R aging, denial trends, and payer performance.
- Able to make data-driven prioritization decisions and present the reasoning clearly.
- Communication & Leadership:
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to billing staff and billing concepts to engineers.
- Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional teams without direct authority.
- Other Requirements:
- High attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality products.
- Flexibility to work the night shift aligned with the US PST time zone.
- Willingness to travel occasionally for customer meetings or company events.
Our Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate has worked in billing and collections before moving into product, and knows from experience why a claim gets denied and what it takes to get it paid. You are a subject-matter expert who can spend a morning with collectors, come back with a precise list of problems and edge cases, and turn it into requirements an engineering team can ship that week. You think in outcomes, measured in days in A/R and dollars collected, and you understand how billing and collections fit into the rest of the revenue cycle.
Why Join Zealie:
- Impactful Work: Play a crucial role in transforming the Behavioral Healthcare industry by developing cutting-edge RCM solutions.
- Direct Ownership: Own the product for Zealie's largest department, with an engineering team that can move as fast as you can define the work.
- Professional Growth: Opportunities for continuous learning and advancement within a growing company.
- Competitive Compensation: We offer a competitive salary and benefits package.
Application Process:
If you are passionate about making a difference and meet the above qualifications, we encourage you to apply. Please submit your resume, a cover letter detailing your billing and collections experience, and examples of requirements documents or product work you have delivered.
Note: This position requires working night shifts aligned with the US PST Timezone.
