About the role

We’re looking for a SDE II (Backend) to join Esper and build impactful features across backend systems. In this role, you’ll own end-to-end development of features, collaborate closely with Product and Design, and deliver scalable solutions that power our device management platform. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment with AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) to accelerate development and productivity.

What You'll Do

• Develop and maintain high-performance backend services, APIs, and distributed systems that handle millions of device interactions daily.
• Work across the backend systems, building robust backend services 
• Collaborate with the Product, Design, and Customer facing team to deliver customer-focused solutions.
• Contribute to architectural decisions, design scalable solutions, and help shape our technical roadmap.
• Conduct thorough code reviews, establish best practices, and mentor junior engineers.
• Experiment with AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity.
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) to accelerate code generation and streamline workflows; apply critical review practices to validate generated output for security, maintainability, and alignment with organizational coding standards before integration.

Experience level:

• 2–4 years of software development experience
• Experience building and maintaining production systems 

Required:

• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language (Python or Go or Java) 
• Experience with relational databases and SQL
• Understanding of system design principles and distributed systems fundamentals
• Experience with web frameworks and APIs
• Experience with version control systems (Git)
• Strong debugging and problem‑solving skills
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Demonstrated familiarity with AI‑assisted dev tools and best practices
