Position Overview

Eurasia Group is seeking an experienced Director to join our Africa Practice and lead research and advisory work focused on political and economic developments within South Africa and the broader sub-region. This individual will serve as our lead expert on South Africa, providing timely, evidence-based insight and thought leadership for our institutional investor and private sector clients across all sectors, with a particular focus on mining, energy, fiscal policy, and foreign exchange dynamics.

This is an individual contributor role reporting to the Africa Practice Head, with significant visibility across internal and external EG stakeholders. The Director will be based remotely within South Africa (Johannesburg strongly preferred) and should be comfortable traveling domestically and periodically to London, New York, Dubai, and Tokyo for client and firm meetings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth research and forward-looking analysis on South Africa’s political environment, macroeconomic landscape, and key sectoral dynamics, with a focus on mining, energy, fiscal policy, and FX.
  • Produce high-quality written research outputs—both short- and long-form—delivering clear, actionable, and evidence-based insight to help investors and corporations navigate regional risk and opportunity.
  • Provide oral briefings and presentations to sophisticated institutional investor clients, tailoring insights to evolving market needs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across EG’s regional and sectoral teams on major publications, events, and high-priority client mandates.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to deepen regional expertise and analytical capabilities.
  • Represent Eurasia Group’s analytical framework and standards to clients and external partners as a trusted, intellectually rigorous advisor.

Qualifications

  • At least 8 years of professional experience analyzing South African or sub-Saharan African political economy within the private sector, think tank, consultancy, public sector, or international organization.
  • An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in political science, economics, international relations, or a related discipline is strongly preferred.
  • Deep subject matter expertise in South Africa’s policy, macroeconomic, and sectoral context; proven knowledge of mining, energy, fiscal policy, and FX issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce sophisticated written analysis and deliver impactful briefings to clients; evidence-based mindset and strong attention to analytical rigor.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English; ability to explain complex, technical issues to non-expert audiences.
  • Quantitative analysis and/or programming skills are a plus.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced environment; skilled at meeting tight deadlines while maintaining high standards.
  • Self-motivated and collegial, with a collaborative approach to problem solving.
  • Willingness and capacity to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Location:

Remote within South Africa (Johannesburg preferred); ability to travel internationally up to several times annually.
