About the role

We are seeking a VP of Risk Operations to lead Fold’s enterprise risk strategy and execution across payments fraud, operational risk, information security, and public company compliance. You will be the central point of accountability for understanding, mitigating, and reporting on the diverse risk landscape we operate in—ensuring we can scale safely, comply with audits, and protect our users, partners, and shareholders.

This is a strategic and hands-on leadership role that requires cross-functional collaboration, technical literacy, and a sharp risk-management mindset. You’ll work across Product, Engineering, Compliance, Finance, Security, and Leadership to proactively identify and mitigate risks while building the systems, policies, and processes that keep Fold safe and resilient.


What you will do

Payments Fraud & Transactional Risk

  • Oversee and evolve our systems for detecting and mitigating fraudulent activity, including account takeovers, stolen payment credentials, and suspicious patterns.
  • Lead the design of controls and tooling for real-time monitoring of transactional risks.
  • Partner with product and support teams to improve fraud detection while minimizing friction for good users.

Operational Risk Management

  • Build and maintain Fold’s enterprise risk register, performing regular risk assessments across functions including customer operations, compliance, product development, and finance.
  • Define and monitor key risk indicators (KRIs) and work with teams to resolve root causes.
  • Champion a culture of risk awareness across the organization, from frontline operations to executive decision-making.

IT & Security Risk Oversight

  • Partner with engineering and security teams to evaluate risks associated with infrastructure, code deployments, third-party integrations, and data access.
  • Support SOC 2, FedRAMP, or other security frameworks as needed.
  • Implement appropriate governance policies and incident response procedures.

Public Company & Audit Readiness

  • Oversee the risk functions required of a publicly traded company, including internal controls, SOX readiness, financial risk exposure, and external audit support.
  • Interface with auditors, board committees, and legal stakeholders to ensure transparency and alignment.
  • Develop policies, reporting structures, and documentation that meet regulatory and investor expectations.

Who you are

  • 8+ years of experience in risk, compliance, fraud, audit, or security roles—ideally within fintech, crypto, payments, or public companies.
  • Deep understanding of fraud prevention, financial transaction monitoring, and operational risk frameworks.
  • Familiarity with SOX, SOC 2, ISO 27001, or equivalent audit/compliance environments.
  • Excellent project management, cross-functional leadership, and communication skills.
  • Comfort with risk quantification and reporting to executive and board-level stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker with a hands-on bias for building tools, processes, and teams.

Nice to Haves

  • Experience in crypto or digital asset environments.
  • Worked at or alongside a public company, especially pre/post-IPO transition.
  • Knowledge of third-party risk management, business continuity planning, or crisis response.
