Head of C3 Systems

About Forterra

Forterra is a leading provider of autonomous systems for ground-based movement in the working world. Amongst some of the earliest innovators in the field of driverless technology, Forterra is focused on building systems that protect front-line soldiers and enable civilian workers in our industrial base. Forterra is the go-to provider of ground autonomy solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense, which harnesses the technology for asymmetric warfare in critical conditions.

About the role

We are looking for a highly technical and visionary leader to architect and build Forterra’s Command, Control, and Communications (C3) ecosystem for the AutoDrive autonomous vehicle stack.

The Head of C3 Systems will be responsible for the team architecting and building out our command and control stack including AutoDrive C2 interfaces, external-facing API endpoints, UI/UX designs for the TerraLink product line, the UI endpoint to AutoDrive remote communication links, and the vehicle side external interface stack. This work will be done in close collaboration with our Engineering, Product, and Growth teams.

As a leader of growing teams, your role will have high impact across the company and our products today and into the future. You will be responsible for making valuable trade-offs as you work to ensure that our systems are prepared to scale - which will require excellent communication, technical prowess, and trust.

What you'll do

  • Own the full solution space, from user experience through communications, of connecting and controlling our autonomous systems in the field. This includes:
    • Lead the design, build, and deployment of our user interfaces: live, map-based interfaces for displaying and interacting with autonomous vehicle data and controlling both individual and groups of vehicles.
    • Leverage best-practices in web and remote communications, networking and data transfer, and lightweight and robust API definitions to allow a group of disparate operators to maintain awareness and control of the fleet to achieve desired mission outcomes.
    • Oversee data management technologies and cloud infrastructure which allows remote developers, end users, and decision-makers to effectively apply AutoDrive to their opportunities.
  • Work with Product Engineering counterparts to drive scope, schedule, and execution aligned to strategic roadmaps and product goals.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical degree
  • Proven success leading delivery of a product from design through sustainment
  • Experience delivering front-end user applications, especially data-intensive or map-based systems
  • Experience with lossy and high-latency communications frameworks
  • Ability to empathize with end-users, to turn needs into features, and to balance user experience with engineering constraints
  • Minimum 10+ years of technical engineering experience
  • Minimum 5+ years of team leadership experience
  • U.S. Person status is required as this position needs to access export-controlled data

Preferred Qualifications

  • We encourage people from all backgrounds to apply, but our tech stack uses AWS, C++, DDS, QT, Linux, Android, Figma, Java, REST, MQTT, and OpenAPI/AsyncAPI, so familiarity with all of these tools and languages would be useful
  • Previous experience working with defense or automotive technologies, especially mobile systems
  • Startup experience
