About the role

We are looking for a highly technical engineering leader to lead and build Forterra’s supporting software for the AutoDrive autonomous vehicle stack. Supporting software includes our command & control (C2) software APIs, data pipelines and services, user interface components, and other supporting software. As a leader of growing teams, your role will have high impact across the company and our product today and into the future. Our supporting software teams develop and maintain user interface software, messaging, vehicle-side software, networking layer, and data frameworks for our ground autonomous vehicles.  As the Director of Software Engineering, you will be responsible for the team architecting and building out our command and control stack which includes C2, UI/UX, the c2 node to bot communication link and the vehicle side interface stack. this will be done in close collaboration with our Engineering, Product, and Growth teams.

 

As a key engineering leader at our organization, you will be responsible for making trade-offs as you work to ensure that our systems are prepared to scale - which will require excellent communication, technical prowess, and trust. 


What you'll do

  • Oversee the design, build, and deployment of a real-time, map-based interface for displaying and interacting with sensor data and commanding physical assets 
  • Leverage best-practices in web and remote communications, networking and data transfer, and lightweight and robust API definitions to allow a group of disparate operators to maintain awareness and control of the fleet to achieve desired mission outcomes 
  • Oversee data management technologies and cloud infrastructure which allows remote developers, end users, and decision-makers to effectively apply AutoDrive to their opportunities 
  • Develop a product that can fetch and manage large streams of data while maintaining performant rendering in a low-friction user experience 
  • Work with Product Engineering counterparts to drive scope, schedule, and execution aligned to strategic roadmaps and product goals 
  • Collaborate with our cybersecurity/product security teams to ensure our stack meets or exceeds emerging industry standards, including ISO/SAE-21434 as well as NIST 800-171
  • Work closely with our customers and the Growth Team to delivery autonomous platforms to end users 

 

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical degree 
  • Experience working on frontend applications, especially data-intensive or map-based systems 
  • Experience with lossy and high-latency communications frameworks 
  • Proficiency with a programming language such as C++, Java, and Python 
  • Ability to empathize with end-users, to turn needs into features, and to balance user experience with engineering constraints 
  • Minimum 7+ years of software engineering experience 
  • U.S. Person status is required as this position needs to access export-controlled data 

Preferred Qualifications

  • We encourage people from all backgrounds go apply but our tech stack uses AWS, C++, DDS, QT, Linux, Figma, and Java, so familiarity with all of these tools and languages would be useful 
  • Previous experience working with defense or automotive technologies 
  • Startup experience 



US Salary Range
 $190,000 - $250,000/annually
 

The salary range for this role is an estimate and is based on a wide variety of compensation factors. The salary offered to candidates will vary based on a variety of factors including (but not limited to) relevant work experience, education, specialized training, critical expertise, training, and more. Equity in Forterra is included in most of our full-time, high-demand roles and is therefore considered part of Forterra’s overall compensation package. In addition to base salary and equity, Forterra offers competitive benefits for full-time employees including:
