Mechanical Design Engineer - in person

About the company:

Airloom Energy is building the next era of resilient, utility-scale power.

Our patented wind generation system replaces massive traditional turbines with a low-profile, roller-coaster-style track that uses small, adjustable wings to capture wind energy more efficiently and at lower cost, deployed in a fraction of the time. By dramatically reducing parts, mass, and construction timelines, Airloom is unlocking faster, more scalable clean energy access—designed to respect the land, the views, and the communities we serve. With headquarters in Laramie, WY, and a pilot system underway near Rock River, WY, we’re assembling a team to help bring this breakthrough technology to global scale.

Position Description:

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for creating, modifying, and managing parametric 3D models, complex mechanical assemblies, and detailed 2D manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks. This role collaborates closely with mechanical systems engineers and manufacturing teams to translate design concepts into production-ready models while rigorously applying Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles and ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards.

Position Duties:

  • 3D Parametric Modeling & Execution: Transform top-level mechanical architecture, design concepts and skeleton models into detailed 3D CAD models of machined components, sub-assemblies, welded structures, and sheet metal components.
  • 2D Production Drawing Packages: Generate fully dimensioned manufacturing drawings complete with orthographic projections, detailed cross-sections, surface finish ratings, weld callouts, and FD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Tolerance Stack-Up Analysis: Perform part-level and assembly-level tolerance stack calculations to guarantee proper fit, alignment, and fastener clearance during production assembly.
  • Assembly & Clearance Management: Build and maintain complex top-level assemblies; perform dynamic clearance checks, interference detection, motion checks, and mass properties analysis to ensure physical fit, form, and function.
  • BOM & PDM Data Control: Generate and maintain multi-level Bills of Materials (BOMs); manage file versioning, check-in/check-out workflows, part number creation, and Engineering Change Orders (ECO/ECN) within Solidworks PDM (3D Experience).
  • Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFM/DFA): Interface directly with machine shops, fabrication vendors, and internal technicians to optimize part designs for CNC milling/turning, sheet metal forming, laser/waterjet cutting, and efficient prototype assembly.

Position Qualifications:

  • Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Associate Degree in CAD/Drafting Technology combined with relevant industry experience.
  • Experience: 2-4+ years of dedicated professional CAD modeling and drafting experience utilizing SolidWorks in an active product development, hardware startup, or manufacturing environment. Experience in industrial design is a plus.
  • Technical Knowledge: Foundational understanding of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards, tolerance stack-up analysis, standard fastener hardware, and common fabrication processes (sheet metal, CNC machining, welding).
  • PDM/PLM: Exposure to or practical experience with SolidWorks PDM (3D Experience preferred for revision management, data vaulting and engineering release lifecycle.
  • 3D Spatial & Mechanical Aptitude: Exceptional spatial visualization skills and physical intuition regarding real-world clearances, fastener access, and assembly constraints.
  • Precision & Attention to Detail: Meticulous accuracy regarding dimensional callouts, tolerance boundaries, fastener selections, drawing notes, and BOM structure.
  • Eagerness to Learn & Grow: Strong desire to expand engineering skills in hardware architecture, DFM, tolerance stack-ups and prototype fabrication.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Clear, effective communication skills across mechanical engineering, manufacturing facilities, assembly technicians and procurement vendors.

What Airloom offers:

  • Career Growth: We invest in our team. We offer support for team members to take advantage of relevant learning opportunities, and we are committed to collaboratively identifying paths for individuals and the company to grow together.
  • Full Benefits: We offer full medical, dental, and vision coverage. We also offer life coverage up to a threshold amount, with the option for individuals to purchase additional coverage.
