About the Company
Atlas Data Storage is revolutionizing the field of information technology by innovating DNA Data Storage solutions. At Atlas, we are developing a massively parallel, high-throughput, semiconductor-based information storage technology by leveraging the unique properties of synthetic DNA. Working at Atlas means being part of something bigger than yourself, where every person in every role has the opportunity to make a difference. We are looking for highly self-motivated and innovative candidates to join our team and help us build the future of data storage.
About the Role
This is a unique opportunity to join a talented team of scientists and engineers focused on solving one of the most critical challenges in DNA data storage. As a Senior Scientist in Surface Chemistry, you will serve as a subject matter expert and scientific leader in the development of our core substrate architectures. Your primary focus will be designing and executing synthetic strategies that bridge foundational deposition chemistries (such as self-assembled monolayers) with complex biomolecules and antifouling layers. The ideal candidate is an innovative surface chemist with a strong synthetic background who thrives in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, synthesis, and optimization of complex surface architectures on semiconductor substrates.
- Develop and execute robust synthetic protocols to bridge core deposition chemistry (e.g., self-assembled monolayers) with biomolecules and antifouling layers.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and scientific leader in surface chemistry, surface modification, and bioconjugation.
- Design, synthesize, purify, and apply novel molecules for surface functionalization.
- Define, plan, and execute various laboratory activities with limited instruction.
- Analyze and scrutinize experimental data to guide surface chemistry optimization, troubleshoot technical issues, and drive project direction.
- Collaborate seamlessly with the chemistry, enzymology, and engineering teams developing novel technologies for DNA data storage applications.
- Present experimental plans, results, conclusions, and next steps at group meetings, project team meetings, and company-wide meetings.
- Maintain detailed and meticulous records of all experimental work and analysis.
Qualifications
- Qualified candidates will have an advanced degree (PhD) in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Experienced MS or BS candidates with significant relevant experience will also be considered.
- Deep expertise in surface chemistry, specifically with small-molecule deposition chemistries (e.g., self-assembled monolayers) on solid substrates.
- Strong synthetic chemistry background with extensive practical experience in bioconjugation, particularly linking synthetic surfaces to biomolecules and antifouling polymers.
- Experience with small molecule purification and characterization (NMR, HPLC, etc.).
- Experience with polymer synthesis and functionalization is highly desirable.
- Working knowledge of a broad range of metrology tools, including techniques like ellipsometry, contact angle goniometry, XPS, or AFM.
- Experience in a biotech or pharma R&D environment is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, optimize, and solve challenging research problems.
- Exceptional collaboration skills and ability to work seamlessly in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Work will be performed onsite in office and laboratory space located in South San Francisco.
- Mobility: Must be able to move about the laboratory and office environment regularly. This includes standing and walking for extended periods, often up to 6–8 hours per day.
- Manual Dexterity: Must have fine motor skills and steady hands to handle delicate instruments, operate laboratory equipment, pipette accurately, and perform repetitive benchwork with precision.
- Lifting/Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds occasionally, such as boxes of lab supplies or equipment.
- Visual Acuity: Must have sufficient visual acuity to read small print on labels, instrument displays, and computer monitors. Close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus are required.
· Environmental Conditions: Frequently exposed to typical laboratory conditions, including biological samples, chemicals, and reagents. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles as required.
