BESS Field Technician 1 – Operations & Maintenance

Clean Energy Services (CES) was founded on four core values: Safety, Quality, Trust, and Efficiency.

We are looking for motivated individuals who want to grow with our company and contribute to our culture of excellence. Because CES supports projects across multiple regions, this role is designed for people who are comfortable working at locations outside their home area and who enjoy traveling to new sites as part of their regular schedule.

About Our BESS Operations

Clean Energy Services (CES) is an independent operations and maintenance (O&M) provider built to run complex, utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). We combine dedicated field crews with a 24/7 Remote Operations Center (ROC) and deep energy-storage operating expertise.

When a battery site is built, someone has to keep it running safely for the next twenty years. Our field technicians are the people who do that.

Our Expectations

Safety:

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. All employees are expected to actively participate in CES’s safety programs, speak up about safe/unsafe conditions, and always report incidents—no matter how minor. Every employee has both the right and the obligation to stop any work they believe is unsafe or unclear.

Professionalism & Client Interaction:

As a member of our field team, you are often the first point of contact with our clients. We expect professionalism, positivity, and strong representation of CES at all times. If you see opportunities to improve our work processes, we want you to raise them.

Teamwork & Work Ethic:

Project work requires attention to detail, thoughtful planning, and full participation from everyone on site. No one should remain idle when others are working. We expect employees to properly care for and maintain their equipment and to use downtime for maintenance or other improvement work.

What Employees Can Expect from CES

  • Fair treatment and growth opportunities. We invest in people who want long-term careers with CES and provide clear paths for advancement.
  • Annual performance bonuses based on results and tenure.
  • Spot bonuses recognizing exceptional safety practices and job performance throughout the year.

Job Description

The BESS Field Technician 1 is responsible for supporting the safe operation and maintenance of utility-scale battery energy storage systems, working under the direction of senior technicians and site leadership. The position is accountable for executing assigned preventive and corrective maintenance tasks, maintaining site conditions, and documenting all work performed to CES standards.

The technician performs all assigned work in accordance with CES safety procedures, OEM maintenance manuals, and applicable OSHA and NFPA requirements. Work is performed on and around energized medium- and high-voltage equipment, battery systems, power conversion systems, and balance-of-plant components.

This is a field-based position. The technician is assigned to a project site, travels between CES locations as required, participates in an on-call rotation, and responds to alarms and equipment faults dispatched by the CES Remote Operations Center, including outside of normal business hours.

The role reports to the site Lead Technician or Site Manager.

Safety Accountability

Battery storage sites carry medium- and high-voltage electrical hazards, stored chemical energy, and arc flash risk. Safety performance is a condition of employment in this role and is evaluated alongside technical performance.

  • Participate in daily tailboard meetings and job hazard analyses (JHA) before any work begins
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures without exception
  • Wear and maintain required PPE, including arc-rated clothing, for every task that requires it
  • Work to NFPA 70E, OSHA, and site-specific EHS requirements
  • Understand and support the site Emergency Response Plan
  • Exercise stop-work authority. Every CES technician holds stop-work authority from the first day on site and is expected to use it whenever conditions or procedures are unsafe.
  • Report every near miss, incident, and unsafe condition, no matter how small

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Preventive Maintenance

  • Assist senior technicians with scheduled inspections of battery systems, power conversion equipment, and balance-of-plant components
  • Support battery module and rack inspections, thermal management system checks, and DC electrical inspections
  • Assist with power conversion system maintenance, including cooling systems and filter replacement
  • Support medium- and high-voltage work under direct supervision, including torque checks and cable termination inspections
  • Assist with infrared thermography scans of site components and connections

Corrective Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Assist the crew in diagnosing faults and isolating equipment
  • Support repairs on battery, power conversion, and medium- and high-voltage equipment under the direction of a senior technician
  • Respond as part of the crew to alarms dispatched by the CES Remote Operations Center
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours response

Site Upkeep and General Duties

  • Perform site-wide grounds inspections, housekeeping, and general site condition checks
  • Support drainage, access road, fencing, and gate upkeep
  • Maintain company-provided tools, vehicles, and electronics in good working condition
  • Assist with spare parts inventory counts and material staging

Documentation and Reporting

  • Complete work orders in the CES maintenance system the same day work is performed
  • Take clear photos and record readings, serial numbers, and fault codes when issues are found
  • Provide accurate equipment and work status to the Lead Technician and the Remote Operations Center

Required Qualifications

  • 0–1 years of electrical, wind, solar, construction, or industrial experience, or relevant trade school training
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Demonstrated commitment to following safety procedure exactly as written
  • Ability to take direction from senior technicians and apply it consistently
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a crew and communicate clearly with site leadership
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to log work in a digital maintenance management system daily
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screen

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs
  • Stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, and climb for 8 to 10 hours daily
  • Work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces as required
  • Work on and around energized equipment under proper supervision and procedure
  • Travel to sites and work on-call during off-shift hours and weekends

Training Provided

CES trains its technicians on the equipment they operate. New technicians receive instruction on battery energy storage systems, inverters and power conversion equipment, and the supporting site technology through a combination of structured coursework and on-the-job training at the site where that equipment is installed.
