Director, Institute for Career Advancement in Medicine (ICAM)

About ICAM

The Institute for Career Advancement in Medicine (ICAM) is HWNY's institute for preparing, supporting, and advancing New York's next generation of healthcare professionals. ICAM brings people, programs, and community-based resources together through six components: Community Outreach and Engagement, Digital Technology, ICAM Essentials Curriculum, Career Support and Mentoring, Barrier Intervention, and Evaluation.

Learners progress through three membership levels: Member, Scholar, and Senior Scholar. ICAM is currently active in the North Country, Central New York, New York City, and Western New York, delivered in partnership with Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), and our vision is to deploy statewide.

The Role

The Director of ICAM is the senior leader of the Institute. You'll own ICAM grants, support regional deployments, and oversee ICAM Thrive, our learner support program providing case management, financial support, and wraparound services so learners can complete their education and launch their careers.

Reporting to the Chief Innovation & Design Officer, you'll lead ICAM program managers, collaborate with AHEC partners, and help shape ICAM's statewide growth, funding, and evolution into a more education-driven institute. This role is grounded in strong operations and supportive leadership: making complex, multi-partner programs run well and helping teams succeed. This is a hybrid role based in our Syracuse or Canton office, with remote and virtual support for regional teams and up to 30% statewide travel.

What you'll do

  • Own all ICAM grants, deliverables, budgets, compliance, and funder reporting
  • Oversee ICAM Thrive and the regional program managers and case management teams who deliver it
  • Set regional targets for enrollment, support, and spending, and track progress
  • Maintain consistent support policies and approval processes across regions
  • Hold contracted partners accountable through clear scopes of work and shared scorecards
  • Build diverse funding through grants, contracts, philanthropy, and state and federal sources
  • Partner on statewide expansion and ICAM's education and curriculum direction
  • Work with HWNY's content, technology, and finance teams to support ICAM's programs

What you bring

  • 5+ years in program management or operations, including 2+ years leading teams
  • Experience managing multiple government or foundation grants, including budgets and compliance
  • Experience leading learner or participant support services, such as case management or financial assistance
  • Experience managing programs delivered through partner organizations
  • A track record of securing funding
  • A supportive, accountable leadership style and strong communication skills

Preferred: experience in healthcare workforce development, AHECs, or state-funded programs, and knowledge of New York State's health and workforce systems.

Why join us

  • A director-level role with real influence over ICAM's growth and direction
  • Hybrid flexibility, with remote work and a home base in Syracuse or Canton
