About the role

The Mitchell Kapor Foundation (MKF) is seeking a Senior Manager, FP&A to lead financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analytical support across the Foundation. Reporting to the CFOO, this role serves as a key financial partner to department leaders, the Investment Committee; translating financial data into insight that informs strategic decisions across the foundation's operating budget and investment portfolio.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is equally comfortable building a multi-year financial model, presenting budget-versus-actuals to a department head, and preparing board-ready materials on a quarterly cadence.

What you'll do

Budgeting & Forecasting

  • Lead the annual operating budget process in partnership with the CFOO and department and focus area leads, from initial planning through Board approval.
  • Build and maintain multi-year financial models that support long-range planning and scenario analysis.
  • Prepare rolling forecasts and re-forecasts throughout the year to reflect actual performance and changing conditions.

Monthly Close & Reporting

  • Support the monthly close process, including review of cash balances, expenditures, and closing journal entries.
  • Prepare and analyze budget-versus-actuals reporting for all departments and focus areas; flag variances and work with department leads to understand drivers.
  • Develop clear, consistent management reporting packages for the CEO, Leadership Team, and Finance Committee.

Audit, Tax & Compliance

  • Own preparation for the annual independent financial and compliance audit, serving as the primary point of contact for auditors and coordinating information requests and follow-up items.
  •  Lead preparation of materials supporting the Foundation's tax filings, including IRS Form 990-PF, in partnership with the CFOO and external tax advisors.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls over financial reporting to safeguard Foundation assets and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial data.
  •  Monitor compliance with applicable federal and state requirements governing private foundation finance, escalating issues to the CFOO as needed.

Investment & Portfolio Analysis

  • Support FP&A for the Foundation's  assets under management, including tracking performance across mutual funds and managed accounts.
  • Assist the CFOO in preparing materials for the Investment Committee and in analyzing capital calls and distributions.
  • Support long-term financial modeling and cash flow projections in coordination with the CIO and outside investment advisors.
  • Contribute to liquidity planning, including analysis supporting a multi-year (3+ year) liquidity outlook.

Grants & Program Financial Support

  • Partner with the grants team to track restricted and unrestricted funds and ensure alignment with donor intent.
  • Provide financial analysis supporting the Foundation's grantmaking, fiscal sponsorship, and PRI activities.

Process & Systems Improvement

  • Identify and implement improvements to budgeting, forecasting, and reporting processes and tools.
  • Maintain documentation of financial planning policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field; MBA or relevant professional certification (CPA, CFA) a plus.
  • 6–9 years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or nonprofit/foundation finance, including experience building financial models and leading budget processes.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial modeling; experience with financial systems and reporting tools (e.g Sage Intacct, Adaptive Insights) strongly preferred.
  • Experience in a nonprofit, foundation, or mission-driven organization preferred; familiarity with private foundation financial and regulatory considerations is a plus.
  • Strong analytical skills paired with the ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines, including recurring monthly, quarterly, and annual cycles.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail, with a strong sense of ownership over the numbers.
  • Collaborative, low-ego style; comfortable operating in a small, high-trust team environment.
