Phocas builds data analytics and financial planning software that helps thousands of businesses make better decisions. Our Christchurch Product & Development centre is home to people building and improving those products every day. 

We’re looking for four interns to join the team this summer. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers on real product challenges, learn quickly, and help shape software used by businesses around the world.

What you'll work on

You'll work in pairs on one of two projects that'll have real impact for our team and our customers:

• Synthetic Data Generator: Our test databases are great for demos, training, and reproducing bugs…until a customer hits an edge case they don't cover. You'll build a tool that turns a plain-language prompt into a working synthetic database: researching real use cases, designing the interface, building the tool and its deployment pipeline, and stress-testing it against misuse.

• Resource Planning (Capex & Fixed Assets): Phocas is building the next module in its Resource Planning suite: capital expenditure and fixed-asset planning. You'll build the data model for tracking assets, implement depreciation logic against rules defined by one of our in-house accountants, and build out a front-end for reviewing asset schedules.

You'll be supported by experienced mentors, get hands-on with modern tools and practices, and have a lot of fun along the way.

You must be:

• in your penultimate year of a software engineering or computer science degree

• based in New Zealand with valid working rights, and studying at an NZ university (or other tertiary education institution)

• curious and keen to learn

• someone who loves collaborating with others to solve challenging problems

Bonus points for:

• an outstanding academic record, interesting personal projects, industry experience, or a particularly unusual hobby

• an interest in, passion for, or experience with data analytics and/or accounting & finance

Other things you need to know:

• internships run for 10 weeks/400 hours, starting end November

• we shut down between Christmas and the New Year

• we think it's important for our interns to come into the office every day, so you have plenty of help, support, and learning opportunities

• our office is centrally located in Sydenham (near the Colombo). We have plenty of parking on site for four, two, and one-wheeled methods of transport
