Senior Counsel

About Reverb

Reverb is the largest online marketplace dedicated to buying and selling new, used, and vintage musical instruments. Since launching in 2013, Reverb has grown into a vibrant community of buyers and sellers all over the world. By focusing on inspiring content, price transparency, musician-focused e-commerce tools, a music-savvy customer service team, and more, Reverb has created an online destination where the global music community can connect over the perfect piece of music gear.

We love working at Reverb because we’re making the world more musical—through our marketplace and through Reverb Gives, which provides musical instruments to youth music education programs. We were named a “Best Place to Work” by Built in Chicago and a “Top Workplace'' by the Chicago Tribune.

About the role

We’re in an exciting new chapter at Reverb as an independent marketplace, and we’re seeking a Senior Counsel to join as the second lawyer on our legal team. This role offers a rare opportunity to join at a pivotal moment, help define how legal empowers our business, and contribute to a mission centered on making the world more musical.

You’ll operate at the intersection of law, product, payments, trust & safety, and operations, advising on complex, evolving issues while helping design practical, business-forward solutions. This is a highly visible opportunity for someone who thrives in dynamic environments and wants real ownership, influence, and the ability to make a lasting impact.

This is a full-time position located in Chicago, reporting to Reverb’s General Counsel. Our hybrid work model offers flexible workplace policies that can accommodate local candidates who are comfortable working from home and traveling to the office 4+ times per month.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a legal partner for marketplace-related issues, including fraud prevention, payments regulation, consumer protection, and marketplace tax compliance.
  • Advise cross-functional teams on product development, new initiatives, and operational processes to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
  • Partner in building the legal function by designing, implementing, and scaling legal operations infrastructure, including contract lifecycle management, playbooks and templates, workflow automation, and documented legal workflows.
  • Proactively identify emerging legal and regulatory issues impacting online marketplaces and translate them into practical business guidance.
  • Serve as a go-to legal partner for day-to-day issues, while designing and refining practical legal frameworks, templates, and processes to support efficient, compliant operations.
  • Serve as a legal partner for commercial contracting, advising on structure and risk while drafting and negotiating artist, brand, technology, vendor, and licensing agreements.
  • Collaborate with and manage outside counsel as needed

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of legal experience, including in-house experience.
  • Preferred experience supporting a technology, e-commerce, or marketplace business, with exposure to product, platform, or marketplace-related legal issues.
  • Commercial contracting experience, including drafting and negotiating a broad range of agreements such as artist partnerships, SaaS/technology, vendor, and licensing agreements.
  • Working knowledge of privacy laws and compliance frameworks, and experience partnering with cross-functional teams to operationalize legal requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to advise cross-functionally on product development, new initiatives, and operational processes in fast-paced environments.
  • Proven ability to translate complex legal and regulatory issues into practical, business-focused guidance.
  • Fluent using AI and legal technology tools to improve efficiency, scalability, and legal service delivery.
  • Strong communicator and trusted partner, able to influence across teams such as Product, Payments, Trust & Safety, Finance, and Operations.
  • Comfortable creating structure where it doesn’t yet exist, including building policies, templates, workflows, and scalable legal processes.
  • Highly organized and process-oriented, with the ability to manage competing priorities and both strategic and day-to-day legal needs.
