Overview

Position Summary

This is a high-travel, field-based position requiring travel throughout eastern or western US for extended periods (3-4 months at a time).

The YTV Operator is responsible for operating the Yard Testing Vehicle (YTV) system, performing manual rail defect testing, supporting portable inspection operations, and ensuring daily readiness and maintenance of all equipment. This role includes the operation of the B-Scan walking stick system when required.

The location shown in this posting is used for recruiting purposes. This role is field-based and requires extensive travel to multiple job sites, which will be the primary work locations.

For this particular role, you will be required to travel as far south as New Orleans, LA and as far north as Minnesota and Michigan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Field Operations

• Operate the Yard Testing Vehicle (YTV) testing system
• Perform manual testing of potential defect locations using designated equipment
• Operate the B-Scan portable walking stick system as needed
• Drive truck and trailer to multiple testing locations daily (DOT Medical Card required)

Equipment Setup & Maintenance

• Ensure YTV is fully prepared for daily operations (fuel, water, and readiness checks)
• Perform basic routine maintenance on YTV as required
• Maintain the cleanliness of the truck, trailer, and YTV (interior and exterior)
• Assist in ensuring equipment reliability and operational readiness

Documentation & Reporting

• Complete daily pre-trip inspection forms for trailer and YTV
• Maintain and submit DOT driver logs as required
• Complete daily test reports and transmit within required timelines
• Submit expense reports in a timely manner
• Monitor and respond to company and vehicle-based email communications
• Communication & Coordination
• Communicate regularly with Sperry field management
• Interact with customer personnel to maintain testing schedules
• Coordinate with customer management as needed
• Report issues, delays, or safety concerns promptly

Safety & Compliance

• Follow all company safety policies and procedures
• Participate in safety meetings and conference calls
• Report safety violations or equipment issues immediately to supervision
• Maintain compliance with DOT regulations and requirements

Basic Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required
• Valid driver’s license
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOT Medical Card
• Mechanical aptitude required
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to pass a DOT physical, drug screen, and background check (where permitted by law)

• Pay: $20.00 per hour during paid training. Upon successful completion of the training program and promotion to YTV Operator, compensation increases to a $60,000 annual base salary
