Senior QA Engineer

Senior QA Engineer, Engineering (remote)

Full-Time, Remote / Salary, Exempt / Includes Benefits, PTO, Flexible Schedule, Equity

At Steno, we’re growing fast and transforming the litigation technology industry with best-in-class court reporting, modern solutions that add value for lawyers, and an exceptional client experience. We partner with law firms to simplify complex workflows, deliver reliable outcomes and case insights, and to revolutionize a traditionally outdated space while we expand across the country.

In this role, you'll lead QA efforts across complex, multi-component systems, shape our overall testing strategy, and mentor the engineers around you. If you want ownership over something that actually matters and a team that treats quality as a first-class concern, come join us.

Who are you?

You're a senior QA engineer with deep experience in test automation and a genuine passion for building quality in from the start, not bolting it on at the end. You have strong TypeScript/JavaScript skills, hands-on experience with Playwright or Selenium, and you're comfortable digging into complex codebases to understand what actually needs to be tested. You think strategically about coverage and efficiency, not just whether the tests pass. You've mentored other engineers, led quality initiatives, and communicate well across technical and non-technical lines.

If you're passionate about quality as a discipline, not just a checkbox, and you want to work in an engineering culture that treats continuous improvement as a core value, come join us!

On a regular basis you’ll be:

  • Leading QA planning sessions for major features and releases
  • Designing and implementing advanced test automation solutions using Playwright and TypeScript
  • Conducting code reviews of test scripts and testing-related code
  • Performing complex system integration testing and analyzing overall test coverage
  • Collaborating with development leads and product managers to integrate quality into the development process
  • Contributing to architectural discussions from a testing perspective
  • Mentoring junior QA engineers and guiding their growth
  • Analyzing quality metrics and driving continuous improvement in QA processes and tooling

You’re gonna crush it if:

  • You have 5+ years of QA experience with demonstrated leadership and strategic planning experience
  • You have experience leading testing efforts for complex, multi-component systems
  • You've become familiar with the downsides of both under-engineering and over-engineering, and developed an appreciation for working pragmatically
  • You seek clarity, and as much simplicity as the underlying problem domain will allow
  • You have a track record of successfully mentoring team members and driving process improvements
  • You can effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • You realize the real project work happens when the last 20% is being completed -- the handling of edge cases, errors, and interesting scenarios is where the real magic happens

Some Requirements

  • Strong TypeScript/JavaScript skills and hands-on experience with Playwright or Selenium
  • Deep understanding of software testing methodologies and when to apply different testing techniques
  • Experience with performance testing and system integration testing
  • Advanced skills in test automation and continuous integration
  • Strong familiarity with SQL, browser dev tools, and web request tools (e.g. Postman)
  • Comfort reviewing pull requests to identify risk areas and design targeted regression tests

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary - $145,000 - $185,000
  • Health, Vision, & Dental Benefits - generous company-sponsored health plans for both employees and dependents, including comprehensive vision & dental
  • Wellness/Mental Health - shared benefits to be used among employees and families
  • Flexible Paid Time Off - allowing employees to find balance in their lives
  • Options of Equity - we know our success is nothing without our team
  • Access to a 401k through Guideline
  • A home office setup and a monthly stipend to offset internet and phone costs

Why our team is different

Engineering at Steno isn't a big, bureaucratic org - it's a tight-knit team built on trust, humility, and a shared drive to keep improving. We're composed of Engineering, QA, Design, Data, and Product, and instead of being siloed, we work hand in hand across all those functions to execute on new ideas and ship real solutions. The work moves fast, and we take ownership of both our wins and our mistakes.

If you're a self-starter who thrives in a fast-moving, low-ego environment and is always looking to get better, you'll do your best work here. We also support your growth - an annual continuing education stipend for books, courses, conferences, and other learning resources comes with the role.
