Strategy & Insights Lead

Surfline's Strategy & Insights team fuels growth for Surfline\Wavetrak by promoting and prioritizing data-driven decisions to achieve our business goals. We sit at the intersection of product analytics, corporate strategy, and executive communication, turning behavioral and financial data into guidance that Leadership, Product, Marketing, and others can act on.

We're seeking a Strategy & Insights Lead to independently tackle our stakeholders' most challenging strategic and analytical questions across surf, marine, and other emerging verticals. Reporting to the Director of Strategy & Insights, you'll own the recurring business reporting Leadership depends on, lead the deep-dive investigations behind our biggest growth questions, and help set the standard for how analysis gets framed and communicated across the company. This is a highly prominent role with the opportunity to influence the company's strategic priorities, and it requires communication and relationship-building skills to partner effectively with stakeholders across the company.

Under Surfline’s “Work from Anywhere” policy, this position may be performed on a full-time remote basis, with California-based candidates strongly preferred.

What You'll Do:

  • Own Monthly and Weekly business reporting end to end, including data integrity, commentary, and the executive narrative of not only what moved but why it moved.
  • Own the metric definitions and data models behind company KPIs so that numbers reconcile across our reporting and analytics systems.
  • Serve as an authority on subscription economics, including gross and net adds, churn, and retention across our surf and marine businesses and international markets.
  • Lead deep-dive investigations into paid growth constraints such as free-to-paid conversion, trial conversion, and campaign effectiveness.
  • Lead investigations into user engagement, including feature discoverability, activation, and adoption, and help design the tests that measure them.
  • Identify and plan long-term corporate growth strategies, building dynamic, flexible financial plans for business cases (Excel) backed by thoughtful qualitative and quantitative analyses.
  • Independently research opportunities including partnerships and M&A, using external and internal sources to evaluate go-to-market variables such as audiences, market sizes, competition, and logistical or environmental factors.
  • Develop executive-ready presentations and summaries that lead with the recommendation (PowerPoint).
  • Partner with the Director of Strategy & Insights on ad hoc initiatives and build strong cross-functional partnerships across Surfline\Wavetrak.

What We're Looking For:

  • 3-5 years of experience in analytics, strategy, corporate development, consulting, investment banking, or a related quantitative field.
  • Experience building complex business models, especially subscription-based and digital products.
  • Ability to distinguish correlation from causation and communicate honest confidence levels.
  • Excellent written communication, including the ability to compress a long analysis into three sentences.
  • Ability to analyze and process high volumes of information and prepare insightful reporting.
  • Ability to build trust and credibility with business partners and key finance and operations stakeholders.
  • Curiosity, resourcefulness, and bias for action.
  • Hands-on experience with a product analytics platform and a modern BI tool. Our stack includes Amplitude Analytics, Sigma Computing, Cursor, Linear, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills.
  • Working fluency with AI tools in an analytical workflow, paired with clear-eyed judgment about where they fail.

You May Also Have:

  • Strong SQL skills and the ability to query, join, and validate data independently.
  • Experience with experiment design and statistical inference.
  • Digital media or subscription business experience.
  • Experience supporting international or multi-market businesses.
  • Passion for surfing, boating, fishing, sailing, or other ocean-going activities.
