Role Description

The Facilities Maintenance Technician (FMT) is a skilled, multi-trade position responsible for the construction, maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of all physical infrastructure at the Swamp Tactical Training Center. This role goes beyond standard facilities maintenance - the FMT is embedded in an active tactical training environment serving U.S. military units, law enforcement agencies, and private operators. In addition to traditional trades work, the FMT provides direct range operations support alongside the Range Safety Officer (RSO), ensures training infrastructure is fabricated and maintained to exact operational specifications, and applies a working understanding of range safety doctrine in a live-fire environment. The ideal candidate brings a seasoned construction background, a military or law enforcement mindset, and the flexibility to support a high-tempo training schedule.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Construction & Facilities

•        Operate heavy and medium equipment for grading, earthwork, and site development across the training property.

•        Perform skilled carpentry using common power and hand tools - including construction of steps, decks, doors, benches, storage structures, and other improvements.

•        Conduct routine and corrective maintenance on all facility structures, including buildings, fencing, roads, and drainage systems.

•        Repair plumbing fixtures, pipes, and associated systems as needed.

Grounds & Land Management

•        Perform grounds maintenance across the full training property.

•        Use chainsaws and brush-clearing equipment to remove fallen debris, fell trees, and maintain sight lines and range corridors.

•        Support erosion control, berm maintenance, and drainage upkeep on and around live-fire ranges.

Equipment Maintenance

•        Check fluids, grease fittings, and perform scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles, heavy equipment, and power tools.

•        Operate and maintain UTVs, ATVs, tractors, and other utility vehicles used to support training operations across the property.

•        Coordinate with management for parts procurement, equipment repairs, and vendor scheduling.

Range & Training Facility Fabrication

•        Fabricate and install target stands, barricades, fences, faux walls, berm extensions, and simulated building structures for training courses.

•        Construct and modify shoot houses, room configurations, and breach points to support evolving training requirements.

•        Perform basic welding and metal fabrication as required for range infrastructure and target system components.

•        Assist the Range Engineer (where applicable) with range improvement projects, including material staging, site prep, and installation support.

Range Safety & Operations Support

•        Assist the lead RSO during live-fire events, dry-fire scenarios, and force-on-force training evolutions.

•        Enforce facility safety rules and NRA/USCCA range guidelines during all operational periods.

•        Conduct pre-event safety walk-throughs; inspect berm integrity, target systems, and downrange areas prior to and following each training evolution.

•        Assist with cease-fire procedures and emergency stop protocols under the direction of the RSO.

•        Maintain accurate range logs, sign-in sheets, and incident/near-miss reports in accordance with facility SOPs.

•        Support range setup and teardown, including target placement, barricade positioning, and ammunition/brass policing.

Military & Law Enforcement Client Support

•        Support visiting military units, law enforcement agencies, and private tactical clients with facility orientation, equipment staging, and course-of-fire configuration.

•        Communicate professionally with personnel of varying backgrounds, including active-duty and veteran military and law enforcement operators.

•        Assist with material transport, range preparation, and facility readiness in advance of scheduled training programs.

Position Requirements

•        Minimum 10 years of verifiable experience in construction, facilities maintenance, or a related skilled trade.

•        Demonstrated familiarity with multiple trades (carpentry, plumbing, equipment operation, grounds maintenance).

•        Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage competing priorities.

•        Punctual, dependable, and consistent - reliability is essential in a training operations environment.

•        Safe working habits that protect personnel, equipment, tools, and the training environment at all times.

•        Competent problem-solving skills and the ability to improvise practical solutions in the field.

•        Basic communication proficiency - email, phone, and computer skills sufficient to coordinate with management, suppliers, and contractors.

•        Valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation to the facility.

•        Ability to comply with all range safety protocols and directives issued by the RSO during operational periods.

•        Comfort and composure working in and around active live-fire and tactical training environments with military and LE personnel.

•        Current CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain prior to first operational assignment.

•        Physical ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, navigate uneven terrain, operate heavy equipment, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly.

Preferred Qualifications

•        Demonstrated experience operating heavy and medium construction equipment (excavators, skid steers, bulldozers, etc.).

•        Basic welding and metal fabrication skills (MIG/stick preferred).

•        NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) certification or equivalent; military NCOIC of Range experience accepted in lieu.

•        Prior military service - particularly infantry, military police, combat engineer, or ordnance background.

•        Prior law enforcement service with range or tactical training exposure.

•        Experience working at multi-range or multi-bay tactical training complexes.

•        Familiarity with force-on-force training evolutions (Simunition, UTM) and associated safety protocols.

•        Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) or equivalent trauma care certification.

•        OSHA 10-Hour Construction certification or higher.

Eligibility Requirements

•        Must be a U.S. citizen.

•        Must not have a felony conviction.

•        Must possess a valid driver's license and reliable personal transportation.

•        Must pass a comprehensive background check, including criminal history, driving record, and federal firearms eligibility review.

•        Must be able to meet all requirements to legally access and be present on an active firearms range and federally licensed SOT/FFL facility.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This is a field-based, physically demanding position conducted primarily outdoors on an active tactical training facility. The FMT will regularly work in hot, cold, wet, and dusty conditions. Regular exposure to firearm noise, dust, vehicle exhaust, and combustion byproducts is expected. Use of appropriate PPE - including hearing protection, eye protection, steel-toed footwear, and hi-visibility gear - is required. The position may periodically require early-morning, evening, or weekend availability to support scheduled training programs.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay Rate: $24.00 – $28.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Annual Performance Bonus: Up to 5% of total annual earnings, based on individual performance, range readiness, and facility condition metrics.
