Ursa Health

Data Integration Engineer

About Ursa Health

We're Ursa Health, an 11-year-old, growth stage company. We straddle the line between being a software company and a tech-enabled consultancy, turning healthcare data into actionable insights. We've developed our healthcare data platform over the last decade combining deep industry IP with a flexible and powerful software product. Thanks to our unique, methodical approach, we're able to make sense of data in a way nobody else in the industry is able to – generating analytics that are trusted enough to change how care is delivered.

We're not talking about fancy black-box models or AI agents, although we do that too. Simply the work of taking healthcare data in its messy, raw format and turning it into results that accurately describe what is actually happening to patients; very few organizations can do this well. And, because of that, we serve as the core data and analytics engine for many of the most innovative companies in healthcare.

We're growing our team and are looking for engineers who can straddle this line between a software company and a consultancy. It's in our DNA that the people building our software products should also be on the front line of client-facing work. It's a hybrid role, and you'll have to be comfortable billing hourly on idiosyncratic client deliverables. But you'll also be channeling that work back into our software products, including our longstanding Ursa Studio and our newer AI-assisted tools like Compass and Sentinel.

Ursa Health is fully remote. We've been fully remote since our founding and have a strong remote-only culture. Hours are flexible. You'll be able – and indeed expected – to turn off Slack for hours at a time in order to get into a flow to solve the most difficult problems.

We believe in a very human application process — and are leaning further into this given the volume of AI-generated and fraudulent applications we're seeing across the industry. If you want to apply to join our team, submit your complete application including current personal contact information, an updated LinkedIn profile, and an updated CV. Qualified candidates will be asked to submit a 2-minute intro video and complete a technical puzzle, which shouldn't take more than a couple hours. The puzzle is drawn straight from our work and will give you an honest sense of the real-life challenges you'll be expected to tackle. After that, you'll interview with our team. We look forward to learning about your experience, getting to know you as a person, and giving you a real window into life at Ursa.

We're excited to meet candidates who are already authorized to work in the U.S., as we are currently unable to provide visa sponsorship.

Ursa Health is an equal opportunity employer. We are passionate about achieving diversity on our team because we know that different backgrounds and points of view fuel innovation and creativity, and will therefore help us reach our goal of making healthcare better and more equitable for all. We foster an inclusive environment where we can celebrate our differences. We encourage candidates from diverse backgrounds to apply to this and all of our open positions. All applicants will be considered for employment without consideration of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable law.

About the Role

Role Department: Delivery

Reports to: AVP, Integration Engineering

The Data Integration Engineer role is ideal for an experienced data professional eager to put their healthcare domain knowledge and engineering expertise to work in a collaborative, mission-driven environment. Your efforts to organize, transform, and automate the flow of healthcare data will unlock actionable insights for our clients, enabling them to move from raw data to meaningful analysis in hours rather than weeks. You'll interpret and integrate client data claims, ADT, clinical/EMR, provider billing, and other operational datasets into the Ursa Core Data Model, building reusable, enduring data models that clients rely on to drive clinical, operational, and financial decisions.

You will work closely with Ursa colleagues across analytics engineering, product development, and customer success, as well as directly with client teams including data architects, analysts, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to understand their data and their needs. You'll leverage Ursa Health's data platform to design and build integration pipelines, data models and increasingly, work alongside AI-assisted tooling that accelerates the process.

About You

  • You're looking for a role that will allow you to apply your experience to a "blank canvas" to design and create elegant and enduring data models.
  • You have great attention to detail and enjoy the process of investigating and interpreting raw data. You anticipate dataset-specific inconsistencies and edge cases before they become problems.
  • You are a consultative partner by nature, comfortable working directly with a range of stakeholders (clinical, operational, data/technology, and actuarial) to understand how data was generated, what its limitations are, and how it will be used.
  • You are looking to join a collaborative team that is passionate about healthcare and strives to build best in class healthcare analytics.
  • You're curious by nature and excited to use technologies that allow you more time to explore, test, and iterate on the data model you design rather than worry about maintaining fragile code.
  • You have a deep understanding of health information systems, medical claims and/or billing data across payors and/or clinical data from your experience as a data architect and/or engineer.
  • You balance technical rigor with pragmatic elegance building solutions that are durable without being overcomplicated.
  • You've worked with AI tools and have developed a clear-eyed sense of where they help and where they don't especially in a domain where the cost of a wrong answer is high.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the integration of complex healthcare data packages including medical claims, pharmacy claims, revenue cycle billing, ADT, clinical/EMR, FHIR and value-based care financial datasets into custom or Ursa Studio standard data models through collaboration with client and Ursa Health teams.
  • Design and operationalize rigorous validation checks that preserve data integrity, prevent analytics degradation, and maintain client trust.
  • Communicate with clients to understand their data, its limitations, and intended analytical use cases to support them in interpreting the findings that drive their businesses.
  • Effectively communicate with internal and client teams to gather and understand the information necessary to successfully complete projects, documenting both the process and final deliverables so a non-technical stakeholder can understand the interpretation and business rules.
  • Collaborate with analytics engineers, customer success, and product teams to align delivery with client expectations and to surface product opportunities informed by client needs and data behavior.
  • Support client teams to advance their implementation initiatives, including training, measure building, and report interpretation.
  • Thoughtfully leverage AI-assisted tooling to accelerate and improve delivery, applying domain knowledge and human judgment to ensure sound output.
  • Keep your knowledge current regarding data security and privacy procedures and policies. Comply with HIPAA procedures and collaborate with the Incident Response Team as directed.

  • Familiarity with healthcare data integration concepts, common data sources (payer data files, EMR/EHR systems), data formats (claims, billing, X12 835/837/270, HL7 ADT, FHIR), and medical coding standards (CPT, ICD-10)
  • 4+ years implementing and maintaining ETL/ELT pipelines and processes.
  • 4+ years of experience in end-to-end data integration (data discovery, data cleansing and curation, analysis, transformation, validation and maintenance).
